Ο υπουργός Μεταφορών, Μπερτράν Σεν-Ζαν, ξυπνά τη νύχτα από τον επικεφαλής του επιτελείου του. Ένα λεωφορείο έχει βυθιστεί σε μια χαράδρα. Αναγκάζεται να πάει εκεί καθώς δεν έχει άλλη επιλογή. Από εκείνη τη στιγμή, αρχίζει η οδύσσεια ενός πολιτικού σε έναν όλο και πιο περίπλοκο και εχθρικό κόσμο.
To πολιτικό θρίλερ υψηλής οξυδέρκειας που ξεπέρασε το μισό εκατομμύριο εισιτήρια στη Γαλλία και έγινε εξώφυλλο στην Liberation απασχολώντας την κοινή γνώμη, απέσπασε 3 Βραβεία Σεζάρ αλλά και τις καλύτερες εντυπώσεις στην ελληνική του πρεμιέρα, στο πλαίσιο του 13ου Φεστιβάλ Γαλλόφωνου Κινηματογράφου, όπου και κέρδισε το Μεγάλο Βραβείο της Επιτροπής!
Ο Pierre Schoeller στην δεύτερη ταινία του (υπογράφει σενάριο, σκηνοθεσία και μουσική!) προσπαθεί να δείξει την αναπόφευκτη σύγκρουση στην οποία έρχεται η ανθρώπινη πλευρά ενός Υπουργού και ο προσωπικός, ιδεαλιστικός του αγώνας με την καταιγιστική πολιτική καθημερινότητα που τον φέρνει αντιμέτωπο με ίντριγκες, σκάνδαλα, διεφθαρμένους και καιροσκόπους αντιπάλους.
Η ταινία ξεκινά με μία ονειρική μεταφορά, μίας γυναίκας που σέρνεται προς το ανοιχτό στόμα ενός κροκόδειλου. Ο εφιάλτης, επί της ουσίας, για τον Υπουργό, είναι σκηνοθετικά επηρεασμένος από το concept μιας φωτογράφισης του μεγάλου φωτογράφου Χέλμουτ Νιούτον (1920-2004), ενός από τους πιο εκκεντρικούς, πολυσυζητημένους και καινοτόμους, σύγχρονους φωτογράφους. Με αυτή την παρομοίωση λοιπόν, ο σκηνοθέτης προοικονομεί στον θεατή, την περιπέτεια του πολιτικού του πρωταγωνιστή.
Ο Pierre Schoeller δε θα μπορούσε να απεικονίσει με καλύτερο, πιο σύγχρονο και άμεσο τρόπο την μικρο-κοινωνία της πολιτικής. Μέσα από το πορτρέτο του υπουργού σκιαγραφείται μια νέα «φυλή» ανθρώπων μέσα στην πολιτική ζωή και κατ? επέκταση στην κοινωνία, όπου κάποιοι, προσπαθούν να αντισταθούν και ΔΕΝ κυριεύονται από τη μανία διαιώνισης της καριέρας τους, η οποία χαρακτηρίζει την πλειοψηφία των πολιτικών.
Πρόκειται για την αντίσταση σε μία πλεκτάνη που το ίδιο το πολιτικό σκηνικό στήνει στους εμπλεκόμενους, και περιγράφεται με κάθε λεπτομέρεια στην ταινία, μέσα από μια σειρά από χειραψίες, συναντήσεις σε αίθουσες συνεδριάσεων, ομιλίες και μηνύματα στα κινητά τηλέφωνα και μυστικές συνομιλίες στο πίσω κάθισμα του υπουργικού αμαξιού, που τελικά οδηγούν σε μία ηθική κάθοδο, όπου όλα γίνονται πίσω απ? τις κουρτίνες.
Μέσα απ? την ηθική κατάπτωση εκείνων που ασκούν την εξουσία (exercice de l?etat) ο σκηνοθέτης αποδομεί τα κλισέ και την «πολιτική» των πολιτικών, αποδίδοντας τελικά ένα σεβασμό σ? εκείνους που αντιστέκονται, καθώς η ταινία δεν περιγράφει το πώς ένας απλός άνθρωπος οδηγείται στο τέλμα από ματαιοδοξία ή από απλή δίψα για την εξουσία, αλλά το πώς η ίδια η εξουσία τρώει τη σάρκα της και αν τελικά μπορεί κάποιος να ξεφύγει από το στόμα του... κροκόδειλου.
Το εσωτερικό θρίλερ εντείνει η μουσική που έγραψε ο ίδιος ο σκηνοθέτης για την ταινία, καθώς και οι ρυθμοί της σύγχρονης κοινωνίας που μεταφέρονται από σκηνοθετικές επιλογές, όπως τα μηνύματα στο κινητό που φαίνονται στη μεγάλη οθόνη. Όλο το καστ ανταποκρίνεται με τον πλέον ρεαλιστικό τρόπο στην απεικόνιση της πολιτικής ζωής, (που έτσι κι αλλιώς μας παρουσιάζει καθημερινά η τηλεόραση και τα «παράθυρά» της), ενώ η πολιτική ίντριγκα δε θα μπορούσε να βρει καλύτερο εκφραστή από τον Βέλγο ηθοποιό Olivier Gourmet.
Η ταινία προκάλεσε μεγάλη αίσθηση στην κοινωνία και την πολιτική ζωή της Γαλλίας, χαρακτηρίστηκε από πολλούς «πολιτικό μανιφέστο», έγινε εξώφυλλο στη Liberation και γράφτηκαν σχετικά εκτενή άρθρα σε μεγάλα έντυπα της Γαλλίας, πολλά από τα οποία σύνδεσαν την ιστορία του ήρωα με αυτή του Στρος Καν.
