Your Excellency the Secretary General, Mr /Ms President, fellow Delegates, ladies and gentlemen,

It is an honour to represent Bulgaria at the 12th annual conference of Model United Nations 2014 in Thessaloniki.

 

Bulgaria became a member of the United Nations in 1955 and since 1966 has been a non-permanent member of the Security Council three times, most recently from 2002 to 2003. Bulgaria was also among the founding nations of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) in 1975. It joined NATO on 29 March 2004, signed the European Union Treaty of Accession on 25 April 2005, and became a full member of the European Union on January 1, 2007.

 

Bulgaria wishes to tackle significant issues through debate here. We are greatly concerned by the world?s major problems such as the protection of basic human rights, which continue to transpire in this modern age of acceptance and toleration. Children or women labour abuse and religious discrimination are examples of human rights that are being violated all over the globe. Bulgaria?s contribution to the discussion of those critical issues is an attempt to create a better world for all the people and we hope that this conference will result in decisive, safe and effective resolutions of the aforementioned important issues of our times.
