As far as I know, the Byzantine Empire does not mean the Hellenic (Greek) Empire. It was part of Roma Empire, divided peacefully and ruled by different peoples, from different nations. For instance, the first Emperor of the Byzantine Empire was Constantine the Great from Illyria (Illyrian), and not from Greece.

Hi Okan!Well mate,of course in all ages it is the balance of power that determines the relations between countries.It goes the same way today.But,really,if you visit i.e Corfu which was under Venetian(and later English) rule and never under Ottoman, you'll notice that they left significant cultural heritage(buildings,roads,etc). Unfortunately, it's not the same in mainland Greece which was under Ottoman rule. The Ottomans left practicaly nothing after 500 years of presence.The fact that the Balkans today are not as much developed as western Europe IMO is the result of Ottomans ruling the region.It was really the first time that the East became so underdeveloped in comparison.In the 15th century, while the West was being swept by the ideas humanism & the Renaissance (in which the Greeks contributed greatly), the East was overruned by a ruler with very poor cultural backround and totaly handicaped in terms of progress and inovations.
