His three-part interaction scheme included: (1) learner-instructor, (2) learner-learner, and (3) learner-content interaction. These three forms of interaction can be found in both traditional classrooms and Web-based courses.

Given the technology-mediated nature of online education, learner-interface (4) interaction is considered as another important type of interaction. Learner - interface interaction is considered as the most challenging type of interaction due to the fact that people have not experienced this type in their traditional classroom courses.
