The Parable of the Workers in the Vineyard

- Matthew 20 -

About this parable

The working and living conditions of the people are the background of the Parable of the Workers in the Vineyard. All of Jesus' listeners had experienced that there were lots of poor unemployed people waiting on the market place of the town all day for someone who needed workers for his vineyard or fields.  Perhaps they themselves waited there every day. The landowners decided what they wanted to pay the poor for their hard work.

In the parable of the workers in the vineyard the landowner pays all his workers the same wage, it didn't matter when they started their work and how long they worked for him.  This made all the workers angry especially those who started their work early in the morning.

Jesus used this outrageous effect to open people's eyes, ears and hearts to make them understand what God's love is, and that everybody is equal for God - it doesn't matter when someone starts to believe in God.
