Looking at the world through a CD
Preparation of optical disk

We can easily experiment with the light - optical disk interaction, because we have many disks available in our homes and there is a variety of light sources easily accessible to everyone(sunlight, lamps of various types, lasers, etc).

It is easy to take out a piece of CD for our experiments.

Step 1

Take ablank CD and a strong scissors.

Step 2

Cut the disk to four quarters.

Step 3

Cut properly the corners to take rectangular pieces.

Step 4

Cover the upper surface with adhesive tape and remove it to remove the protective film .

Step 5

Finally, you get a piece of CD suitable for your experiments.

In a similar way, you can get pieces of DVD, as they give spectra with greater resolution.

Step 1

Take a blank CD.

Step 2

Using a thin blade, carefully depart the upper disk (cover) from the bottom disk (the one the data are recorded).

Keep the bottom disk.

Step 3

Using adhesive tape thoroughly clean the remains of mirror left on the disk.

Step 4

Finally you have a clear disk with some color on it.

Step 5

Remove the color by dipping the disk into a plate with some alcohol.

Step 6

This is the disk we will use to our experimets. We can use the disk as it is, or we can cut a rectangular piece and use it for various constructions.
