Our
school is one of the oldest public schools of Modern Greece, after the
War of Revolution.
It
was built in the beginning of the 20th century at the
centre of Paleo Faliro a suburb of Athens.
At
that time Paleo Faliro was a seaside suburb where the rich Athenians
had their summer houses. Now it is still considered a suburb of Athens
but it is a high density populated residential area of the Athenians.
When
it was founded it had only six classrooms and an office. Later three
more classrooms, a teachers’ office and a canteen were added. Five
years ago a tenth classroom was added.
We
have 200 students and a staff of 14 full time teachers and 5 part time
ones. Our students are from grade 1-6 (six to twelve years old). Due
to lack of space we do not have a kindergarten, an assembly room, a
library, a science and computer lab and all the other facilities the
modern schools have. Unfortunately we cannot add any more rooms due to
building regulations in the area.
Just
opposite our school is the church of Our Virgin Mary whose facilities
like the assembly room we use for theatrical plays and other school
events.
Due
to its central location every year more students that we can
accommodate apply and we have to send them to neighbouring schools.
We
follow the National Curriculum which is compulsory for all the primary
and secondary schools in Greece. Regular teaching starts at 8:15 in
the morning and ends at 1:30 in the afternoon. Then it is the
afternoon session which is not compulsory that starts at 2:00 in the
afternoon and ends at 4:00. Students who stay in the afternoon session
have lunch (they have brought from their homes or buy a sandwich at
the canteen) between 1:30 and 2:00, they can study their homework
supervised and helped by teachers from 2:00 till 3:00 and then they
can have extra activities like more sports and physical education
activities, theatrical education, more foreign languages, more music. |
