2nd Elementary School of Paleo Faliro

Our school is one of the oldest public schools of Modern Greece, after the War of Revolution.

It was built in the beginning of the 20th century at the centre of Paleo Faliro a suburb of Athens.

At that time Paleo Faliro was a seaside suburb where the rich Athenians had their summer houses. Now it is still considered a suburb of Athens but it is a high density populated residential area of the Athenians.

When it was founded it had only six classrooms and an office. Later three more classrooms, a teachers’ office and a canteen were added. Five years ago a tenth classroom was added.

We have 200 students and a staff of 14 full time teachers and 5 part time ones. Our students are from grade 1-6 (six to twelve years old). Due to lack of space we do not have a kindergarten, an assembly room, a library, a science and computer lab and all the other facilities the modern schools have. Unfortunately we cannot add any more rooms due to building regulations in the area.

Just opposite our school is the church of Our Virgin Mary whose facilities like the assembly room we use for theatrical plays and other school events.

Due to its central location every year more students that we can accommodate apply and we have to send them to neighbouring schools.

We follow the National Curriculum which is compulsory for all the primary and secondary schools in Greece.

PRIMARY EDUCATION IN GREECE

Children start compulsory school at the age of 6 when they go to the “A” class.  Next year one of kindergarten will be compulsory and children will start official education at the age of 5.

The school day  starts at 8:10 and ends at 12:25 for A and B classes and at 1:15 for the rest of the elementary classes (B, C, D, E, ST).

Class E who is taught also French or German  finishes at 2:00 o'clock two days per week.

Those whose parents work or wish they can stay till 4 or 5 o’clock to study their lessons and do extracurricular activities like Physical Education, Drama Lessons, Computer lessons, Art and Foreign languages.

Primary schools in Greece are not very big because it sis considered anti-pedagogical to be in huge school with very many pupils in a young age. They have at the most two classes per grade.

In our school we have one A class, one B class, two C classes, two D classes, one E class and two ST classes.

Every class has their own teacher who takes care of their education at every level for two years at the most. Then they have to change teacher. English lessons which are two 3 times per week starting from class C, Physical Education which is taught twice per week in all the lasses and Music which is taught 1 time per week starting at grade C are taught by teachers who have a degree in the relevant subjects.  The foreign language, P.E., Music and Computer teachers can teach both in Primary and Secondary education while the classroom teachers are specialized to teach only in Primary Education. Every class has their own classroom where they spend all they.

Reading, writing, maths and environmental studies are taught in class A and B. Besides the above mentioned subjects  history, science,  religion  and topics like health, holidays, family, our world etc are taught in all the upper classes.
