4th
century
The skene became a permanent stone structure and was used as background of the play by giving the location of the play, which was palace, temple or house.
At the end of fifth century the skene building had three gates and if it was necessary it had windows.
It was two-storied and had an elevated platform for the presentation of the gods (theologeion).
We cannot prove it but we assume there were
two backstage sections. The drama of this century presumes the ability
of free
communication between the dancers and the actors; a fact that means
that the
show was given like it was in the classic period, on a flat stage not
on an
elevated one.
