North America was very different from what it is
today. There were no highways, cars, or cities. There were no schools,
department stores or restaurants. But even then there were communities. They
were the first inhabitants of America, the Indians, who came from Eastern Asia,
following the animals they hunted. That's why they are called Native Americans.
These people have lived in North America for over 20.000 years, and there are
still Indian communities today. When they first arrived in America they
respected the environment. They took what nature gave them and they never took
too much. They made their homes, food, and clothing from the plants and animals
they found around them. Later, when the Europeans came everything changed.
