LIFE IN ANCIENT EGYPT

[[This 4-hour lesson was done with Bī Class Students (Level B) during the year 2000-01. It was their first time in the lab, so there was an introductory lesson in class about ancient Egyptians. A worksheet was given to them based on the website they were going to deal with. A discussion followed about ancient Egyptians' life, similarities and differences with modern Greek life and occupations. The second hour was spent in the lab, where they were divided into two teams (half class read about the farmer's life and the other half about the noble's life). They took down notes and completed the sentences given on their worksheets (for more advanced learners the worksheet could contain questions). During the third hour (in class) they worked in groups which were formed with students from both teams. They wrote about life in ancient Egypt comparing their notes about the farmers' and nobles' lives. The fourth hour was in the lab, where the Ss wrote their paragraph using Microsoft Word, they inserted photographs from the website, they printed them and stuck them on their classroom walls.]]

AIMS

To train Ss work with website pages, to read, understand and extract specific information out of an authentic written text (in fact simplified, since this website is constructed for teaching purposes), to talk about past events using simple past tense, to make comparisons using the degrees of adjectives, to practise vocabulary used in everyday life, to come in contact with a different civilization, to write a paragraph using MSWord, to train Ss cooperate for a common goal.

WORKSHEET 1 (Introductory)

Egyptian Life

Daily life in ancient Egypt revolved around the Nile and the fertile land along its banks. The yearly flooding of the Nile enriched the soil and brought good harvests and wealth to the land

The people of ancient Egypt built mud brick homes in villages and in the country. They grew some of their own food and traded in the villages for the food and goods they could not produce

Most ancient Egyptians worked as field hands, farmers, craftsmen and scribes. A small group of people were nobles. Together, these different groups of people made up the population of ancient Egypt
