IWO

Who is IWO…
The organization started to work since 1997 and was founded officially 1999 by a young Korean and a German who had worked as a volunteer in Germany. It is a non-governmental, non-profit, non-religious organization run by staff and many active volunteers. It is an independent organization working to promote international peace and solidarity through the Youth and Volunteer Exchange.

General information of 2004 Project in Korea

1) We accept between 18 years old to 35 years old. No illegal drugs in IWO projects.
2) We host, Usually, 10-15 volunteers on each workcamp. It consists 3-5 Koreans (Including 1-2 campleaders) and 5-10 international volunteers. It can be different depends on the projects, of course.
3) In our workcamps most activities are decided together with the volunteers and the camp leaders (Coordinators). Your ideas are welcomed and everything can be discussed. So be imaginative, enjoy the time with your members; try to find fun while developing groups together.
4) All participants are required to speak English but if you try to speak Korean with local people it will bring unexpected happiness to you. Korean participants in the workcamp will be happy to help you to teach Korean.
5) Campleader will be 1 or 2 people trained by IWO. They are project coordinator, so they prepare the project and arrange the workcamp matters with IWO. They link among host organization, IWO and participants.
6) Participants should organize their own life condition every day with their brilliant ideas such as cleaning, cooking, planning weekends activities. Korean participants will be happy to give local information for the weekend planning. Participants are asked to cooperate each other.
7) Participants should be motivated to complete the project successfully and open minded to Korea and local cultures.
8) Travelling workcamp is organized for the people who like to stay more than two weeks in Korea. Korea is Far East from Europe, so some volunteers want to stay longer than one workcamp. If you join in travelling workcamp you can join in two workcamps and IWO will help you to get home-stay during the free days between projects.
9) Hanmaum projects are looking for highly motivated volunteers who are very interested in youth and youth summer camp. Volunteers will be animator and counsellor in youth group and organize some programs with staffs. They have to work very hard from the preparation to evaluation every day. There is flight support partly to participants.
10) IWO provides insurance during the workcamp period for accidents, death, hospital cover but dental clinic, lost or stolen belongs, the third part compensation, illness. It covers only limited subjects so that you are required to bring your own travel insurance.

IWO-41 Jangbogo 25/04-05/05 15vols Fest
Jangbogo is the famous historical person in Korea. He was a general to protect Wando area from pirates around Korea peninsula. Wando County organizes the annual festival to celebrate his achievement in Wando Island. Volunteer will help the festival as actors in the street march to show international street of 500 years ago. Volunteer will learn Korean traditional musical instrument called Samulnori in the youth center and perform it at the street during the festival days. They will also introduce their own cultures to local youths at the youth center.
Accommodation: In the local youth center
Location: Wando County is in the west south of Korea peninsular, almost 500km away from Seoul. This county consists of many islands nearby. Festival will be held in main island, Wando Island is bridged from the land.
Remark: Volunteers who are good at the music and performance will be welcome.


IWO-51 Maengsan 01/05-14/05 10vols Envi
The host is the local environment organization in suburb of Seoul. They have promoted to protect the local mountain from the environmental disruption since 1994. They have regular environment education classes for local people and kids in the mountain school. Volunteers will build up the small butterfly garden in the school for the ecosystem restoration and education. Volunteers will do manual work to renovate facilitates of school. They also join in the weekend environment education class as a sub-teacher for kids and family in the local park. Volunteers will teach and show examples there such as making a flute and animals in the nature with flower and tree leaves and so on after they learn how to make. They will also experience the traditional nature dying and involve with many local people.
Accommodation: At the school in the mountain and home-stay at Host org members.
Location: Bundang, Sungnam city, Gyeonggido. It is 20km away from Seoul.
Remark: Volunteers who are interested in environment education in local level are welcome.


IWO-52 Buddha 15/05-28/05 15vols Cult&Fest
There will be the biggest ceremony and festival for 2548th birthday of Buddha in Korea. It’s held every year at Buddha’s birthday to cerebrate it in Seoul and other provinces. So, the entire temple prepares this festival and ceremony a lot for months. The main festival will be held on 22nd to 23rd, May in the street, Seoul. Volunteers will work for the preparation of festival at the temple such as making paper-lanterns, decorating the temple. They will also join in the street performance related with Buddhism during the main festival day so that they will prepare the performance and cooperate with temple youth club beforehand. They will have chances to meet local elderly people by helping their lunch service in social elderly center supported by the temple in Seoul. Participants will have a temple trip to local places after the main festival events.
Accommodation: Buddhism Temple.

Remark: Only vegetarian food will be served.


IWO-61 Pedestrian Tour 09/06-13/07 2vols Cult
Every year 30 teenagers walk throughout Korea with teachers from the end of Korean peninsula to the border of North Korea by only foot for 30 days. They build their own team spirit, self-confidence, tolerance and they will see and feel how beautiful their country is. It never is easy and normal trip but they really love the challenge and completion through overcoming the difficulties by themselves.
Volunteers will help teachers to take care of the teens and counsel the teens to be cheerful by being with them on the way for 30 days.
Requirement: Volunteers should be very healthy and highly motivated to walk for 30days in the road, mountain, river and many places. We will welcome the people who ever experienced before or regularly do some sports.


IWO-71 Hanmaum 20/07-15/08 15vols Camp counsellor
Hanmaum was founded to solve youth education problems as an alternative school. They organize youth & kids season school in order to teach the value of nature, self-confidence, responsibility, respect, tolerance and global citizenship to the students. This summer season school will give special opportunities to students to experience new world. Volunteers will join in 2 programs for kids and youth. They will take care of kids and youth and lead the group as counsellor. They will join and lead the carpentering, mountain climbing, sports, traditional market visit, learning traditional music instrument learning, international food day and little festival. There will be 2 days training for volunteers before summer season school to understand the aims and detail programs. There will be 2days break between 2 programs and be an excursion for volunteers after two programs.
Volunteer profile: Volunteers should be interested in kids and youth activities. The related experiences are recommended such as game, songs, dance, cooks and similar experience. Highly motivation is requested to work hard even at night. They need to be ready to spend 24hours with youth during the programs running.
Remark: 50 % flight support of Apex ticket (Cheapest one)

Location: Cheonan city, Chungchongnam-do. It’s 150km away from Seoul.


IWO-72 Gandhi 22/07-05/08 10vols Cult & Youth
Gandhi school is one of the famous alternative school in Korea. They organize 11days youth camp in order to teach the value of the nature and environment, group cooperation and independence. Participants will be a sub-teacher and live with youth during it such as supporting activities, teaching songs, showing their cultures and cooking together.
Participants will have a couple of orientation days with staff to understand the aim, objectives and activities of summer camp. Participants will have 2-3 free days after the youth camp such as excursion in local areas, climbing national park and so on. Responsibility and motivation to work with them are necessary! Games, songs, cooks and similar kind of experience are very welcome.
Accommodation: In the school.
Location: Youngdong, Chungchongnam-do. It’s about 200km away to south from Seoul.


IWO-73 Myongjin 25/07-09/08 12vols Kids & Soci
This project is hosted by Myongjin School for blind children in Chunchon that is famous for beautiful lake and mountain. The blind kids need to get involved more in the society and contact with the people to experience and understand more. There will be 3 days excursion camp with kids in other province. The volunteers will teach English and some performance to play English theatre in the end of project. They will invite their families and friends to share their efforts. Volunteers will provide them with these opportunities and also plant a courage and self-confidence on them. Volunteers are required to like children and be motivated quite well to the blind.
Accommodation: Dormitory in the school.
Location: Chunchon in Gangwon province. It’s about 100km away to east from Seoul


IWO-74 Nohwa 25/07-08/08 15vols Cult & Youth
Nohwa is small island with 7,000 population in Wando County about 9km away from main land. So, the local kids don’t have many opportunities to get involved with outside of the island. Volunteers will be the bridge between the kids and the world with the intercultural exchange such as international games, cooking, and teaching English, camping in the beaches. Volunteers do voluntary activities with kids and join the local festival in the village. Responsibility and motivation to work with kids are important.
Accommodation: Public building in the local church.
Location: Nohwa island in Wando County, 600 km away to west south from Seoul.


IWO-81 Ganghwa 02/08-16/08 15vols Envi
Ganghwa is an island and has many historical places such as castle, temple and so on. Ganghwa Workcamp is organized together with the National Trust of Korea. Maehwamarum (Ranunculus Kazusensis) is the wild flower threatened with extinction nowadays. Environment NGOs and local government has given the attention to this wild flower and try to save it. Volunteers will make a wood road and set up signboards to protect the reserved area and also environment education place for visitors. Volunteers will also join the environment campaign for this wild flower in local area. They will have some chance to visit other historical place and beaches in Ganghwa.
Accommodation: Local house.
Location: Ganghwa is island connected with bridge. 100km away to west from Seoul.

IWO-82 Beautiful store 02/08-16/08 10vols Envi & Soci
Beautiful Store Workcamp is organized together with the Beautiful Foundation, which is one of biggest NGO in Korea. It promotes recycling the used items and also sharing the income from the recycled items collected and sold by Beautiful Store for the disadvantaged people. Volunteers will work with the local volunteers to get donations of second hand items and sell them. They will visit other city to promote this movement and sell the items by moving beautiful store. They will do some performance as well in the street to appeal to public about recycling and share the second hand items for our environment. They will repair and care for second hand items to sell in the Beautiful Store. There will much chance to contact local people through project. This organisation is like OXFRAM in U.K and it’s a new movement in Korea. There will be a seminar about recycling movement in other country.

Location: Anyang is about 30km to south from Seoul.

IWO-83 Yonchon 16/08-29/08 15vols Envi
Korea had been divided since 1953, Korean War. There is DMZ (De-Militarized Zone) between North and South Korea. The Yonchon County including DMZ has been preserved very well because the people are not allowed to enter freely and the army controlled it for a long time. So, Yonchon is well known with the migratory bird sanctuary thanks to the preserved environment. The local NGO is trying to preserve these natural resource and treasury by educating young people and families.
Volunteers will renovate and decorate the eco-education area, which was built for an environment education. And they will join the activities to clean up the wetlands and move out naturalized plants, which spread over rapidly as they damage the growth of other plants seriously.
Volunteers will visit historical places related with Korean War and will have some seminar about the peace of Korean peninsula with local people.

IWO-84 Sanan 21/08-01/09 15vols Agri & Soci
Sanan Village is known as one of the successful alternative community in Korea. They started in 1984 and 40 people including 18 boy and girls live together now. They had formed the community to build the village that is more environment friendly life and ‘happy society’. They may seem to be far from the 'normal and capitalized life' but confidently close to healthy environment and Non-possession society.
The village wants to encourage young people to give more attention about the environment and share the public resources together. Participants will help the vegetable field works and join the village activities with residents such as party and sports. If they are interested in alternative community it will be great for themselves.
Accommodation: .In the house of the community.
Location: Sanan Village in Hwasung, Gyeonggido is 100km away to south from Seoul.

IWO-IYF 16th International Youth Forum
IWO-IYF 16th International Youth Forum 18/08-24/08 100
The National Council of Youth Organizations in Korea (NCYOK) is the coordinating body for youth organizations in Korea under the auspices of the Korean Ministry of Culture and Tourism.
The National Council of Youth Organizations in Korea and International Workcamp Organization (IWO) are co-hosting the International Youth Forum (IYF) as an international gathering for youth. Recognizing the need for a place where youths from all over the world can come together under one roof discussing current issues that affect both their lives and those they will lead in the near future, the International Youth Forum has not only allowed experts to present their views to youth, but also youths from various cultures setting aside their preconceptions to discuss the issues at hand.
The theme of the year is "Youth and Environment Movement". The participants will discuss about the current environment movement over the planet and the role of youth. They will share the information of their own countries on the environment like the trend, field activities etc. And they will make conclusion on how the you will play an important role in the environment movement for the future of the world.
