Cacho Negro Ecological Centre, Horquetas
The Cacho Negro Ecological Centre is located in the Central Volcanic Range,
8 km Southwest of the town of Horquetas, which is situated 60 km away from San
Jose. The geological characteristics of the farm and the zone in general are
represented by alluvial deposits in the plain lands where the San Rafael River
flows and by volcanic rocks and flood deposits with lava fragments at the mountain
zone. In the farm there is a hill called ‘Linda Vista’ from where one has a
magnificent sight and in clear days the Cacho Negro Volcano (2.150 m) can be
seen.
The sea-level elevation of the farm oscillates between 200-300 meters. The farm
has a size of 100 hectares of which half is covered by primary tropical rainforest
and the other half with "ratana" grass (characteristic of the area)
and many species of trees, plants and animals (birds, reptiles and wild mammals).
All the plants and animal species can be observed while travelling through the
farm with the company of a guide who knows the paths and the dangers. Even though
hunting is not allowed, it is possible to fish with a fishhook in El Espejo
Lagoon and in the rivers and creeks.
Work: Construction of walking paths and hiking routes, reforestation
activities, planting ornamental plants, fruit trees and others, build and maintain
a greenhouse of different species of plants, build bird watchers and observatories
for the fauna (for example butterflies and other animals), classify the trees
and plants with common and scientific names, gardening: ornamental and vegetable
garden, garbage recycling, fix and maintenance of the host’s installations,
support works at the roads and bridges inside the centre. There is also a ‘Tilapia
project’ (the Tilapia is a kind of fresh water fish); participants can help
to feed the fishes and improve the surroundings of the pond where they grow.
Accommodation: The habitational facilities consist of a cabin
with 4 rooms, where 12 persons can stay comfortably.
Language: The official work camp language is English. Spanish
speakers are welcome.
Participation fee: € 280 for a two weeks work camp. This fee
includes the transport from San Jose to the farm and back.
