Greenway

· All camps have duration of two weeks: arrival on Monday (the exact date and time you will find in the info-sheet we will send you after you have applied for a camp) and are finished on Sunday 14 days later.
· The social contact in the camp is at least as important as the work
· Respect for the environment is expected in every camp
· Ideas for improvement of local social and environmental situations are expected, in addition to the work
· Initiative and creativity are expected and could help give the camp the personal direction of that group
· In all camps you have more than enough opportunity and time to learn about many aspects of Thai culture and language from the local people
· The volunteers should arrange their own insurance and take care of medical vaccinations needed for the area
· A fee of 6.500 Thai Baht (approx. 150 Euro/US $) is charged in every Greenway work camp. A portion of that money is used for running Greenway, part is used in the different camps and part is used to help the local NGO's and/or villages we work with throughout Thailand.

Place: Ban Donmon in Satuk Province, Northeastern Thailand
Background: This camp is located in a small village where people make a living from rice and sugarcane farming. It is a poor region on Thailand with a strong influence of Issan culture. Other than farming and some silk production, there are few opportunities for the young people to make money in the area, and so many go to the cities for unskilled jobs. This camp hopes to improve the children's English so they might be able to get better jobs, and to help expand their world and future possibilities by meeting international volunteers. As a part of this camp, you will experience life in rural Thailand, and may also see how (and perhaps help) your neighbours harvest silk and/or work in their fields.
Work: The project will consist of working with local students at schools or other places (like the village or a temple), depending on the program, holidays and current needs. The students will be between 7 and 18 years old.
This camp teaches in a non-formal way. That means that, when you teach in the school, you will have to conform to the local teaching methods or style, but you will be free to choose your own way of teaching and may bring your own ideas into class. Please understand that your methods for teaching are less important than your attitude towards the students. Also, the subjects of teaching can alter, depending on current projects in the camp and might include for example, environmental issues.
Nobody expects you to teach the students to speak English fluently within two weeks, but all consider it more important for the children to have first hand direct contact with foreigners and 'open up'.
Accommodation: The accommodation is simple, dormitory style in the center and home-stays with families in the village. Volunteers should bring their own sleeping-mat and mosquito net as not all families can provide this.
Location: The village is in Satuk province where people make a living from rice and sugarcane farming, supplemented with silk production. Not really places with an exciting nightlife! The center is very close to the village. Beautiful nature can be found at 50-60 km away in different directions, and there are National Parks in this area too.
Special Requirements: No special qualifications are necessary. You may need communication skills beyond language, music can especially be a great way of communicating so bring your own!

Place: Mae Taeng district, Chieng Mai Province, North of Thailand
Background: The project will consist of working closely with local people to implement environmentally friendly waste disposal systems and to establish a forest management program. The project will help the villagers understand the importance of garbage and sanitation control as well as preservation of the surrounding forest.
Work: The camp will consist of two weeks interacting with the local people in the village. The volunteers will participate in the work and daily life of the local villagers in order to teach them better environmental practices. Volunteers will then work together with the villagers to change sanitation and waste disposal practices. Some people from this area rely on (illegal) logging and hunting for income. A large part of this project will be demonstrating to the villagers the value of their environment and the need to reduced the amount of logging. Some teaching of environmental issues in an informal way will help the villagers sustain the accomplishments of the camp. It is expected that the volunteers bring creative ideas in environmental, organizational, or programming issues.
The aim is to have fun (sanuk) together, learn more about each other's culture and set a good basis for future activities while helping the village.
Accommodation: The accommodation is simple, dormitory style and home-stays with families in the village. Volunteers should bring their own sleeping-mat and mosquito net as not all families can provide this.
Location: You can find this camp near the city of Chieng Mai, about 60 km north of Chieng Mai, in a rural area.
Special Requirements: Deep respect for environment and the will to work on improving this in a socially active way. Participants cannot be afraid to get their hands dirty and do physically demanding work such as clearing trails, hauling garbage etc. Further more any ideas on educational activities about the environment to organize in the village are more then welcome!

Place: Different villages in the mountains, Chieng Rai Province, Northern Thailand
Background: Although more than 90% of Thai nationals belong to the same ethnic group, there are a few unique different hill tribes that stay or move along the Thai borders with Burma and Laos. One of the most colourful cultures is the Akha, which can be found in the hills in Northern Thailand. Some of them have Thai citizenship, some not; they are merely tolerated by the government and often accused of opium growing and/or forest depletion. Their relative isolation in the hills has helped to preserve their particular culture but now also poses a threat as their education level is low and their sources of information (think of an understanding of AIDS for example) are limited. Together with local NGO's we are trying to preserve the Akha culture by helping with practical matters while at the same time giving young Akha students access to education. In total, about 50 Akha students live and study at the two centers in the city of Chieng Rai, where they attend school and are educated about their culture. This is done in an attempt to preserve it by having the next generation bring their knowledge back to the villages.
Work: The camp will consist of studying the Akha culture while working with the villagers on their land and teaching in their schools. The work will be in the villages surrounded by beautiful mountains, isolated from the rest of the world.
Accommodation: Accommodation is in the homes of Akha families in the villages.
Location: The camp will be held in Chieng Rai (meeting point) and the surrounding mountains all the way to the boarders, arguably one of the most beautiful locations in Thailand! There are hills and forests and the influence of the hill tribes and nearby Burma and China.
Special Requirements: Interest in social and cultural work.

Place: Kanchanaburi Province, Central Thailand
Background: The project will consist of working closely with a local health care center that is targeting problems created by a high concentration of lead in the soil and water in the area. The health care center is helping villagers understand how the lead is effecting them, and to make positive changes in this area. The health care center is trying to create alternatives to fishing in the contaminated river with the creation of eco-friendly fish farms. They are also helping give villagers sources of clean water by installing pumping systems that bring water from the nearby mountains, instead of from local wells. And finally, they are investigating environmental farming techniques that address these unique problems.
Work: Participants will help the local health center in many ways, including installing new pumping systems that will bring clean water to the village. Volunteers will also teach about the impact of the contaminated environment on the local community's food and water sources in a non-formal way. Non-formal education means that you are encouraged to have fun while teaching, you may bring your own ideas into a lesson, and that learning does not always have to occur in a classroom.
By coming and working in this community, volunteers will demonstrate to villagers that not only is the lead in their environment is a problem, but also show them ways of combating the problem. Volunteers coming from around the world to help a small community has an impact not only by the direct work that is done, but also helps the locals realize the importance of the local health center's work.
Accommodation: You will be staying in dormitory-style accommodations and might also stay in the homes of villagers. Conditions are simple but will serve your basic needs.
Location: The camp will be held in a small village in Kanchanaburi province in Western Thailand. It is located near a national park with beautiful forests and mountains.
Special Requirements: Volunteers are expected to have some ideas formed about environmental health. Volunteers should be interested in getting to know the village as well as Thai culture, and reflect on cultural differences in an open minded way. Volunteers must like children, because there will be many surrounding them all day!

Place: Kao Yai National Park, Nakorn Ratchasima Province, Northeastern Thailand
Background: The project will consist of working for two weeks in one of the largest national parks, the Kao Yai National Park. Although located only 250 km from Bangkok, it still largely in its virgin condition. Tigers, elephants, wild bulls and many other large and smaller species of animals roam free through the forests.
The biggest threat to the National Park is humans. The people living in villages surrounding the park are poor and often make their living by going into the forest illegally to cut the plants and kill the animals to sell on the market. The National Parks trying to change this with the Kao Yai Conservation Project (KYCP), which has three teams:
1. A patrol team that protects wildlife from poachers
2. A scientific team that counts animal population to measure the park's biological health
3. A community outreach team that works with local children and villagers
The community outreach team organizes youth camps to teach the children about the forest and the effects of poaching. Through these camps, the foresters learned that the people in the village were interested in farming (chickens, vegetables, mushrooms and insects) as an alternative to poaching. In 2000, the project began and two foresters where placed in each of the three villages. The initial materials to build four farms were brought in and farming began. Currently, KYCP is investing a lot of money and work in these three villages and the project is a role model for many other national parks. It is however, a difficult project. The people living in the village are poor and many of them are not interested in working, while others who are interested do not have much knowledge about farming.
All good ideas for improvement of the work and the village are more then welcome. If you introduce a new idea do not be disappointed if the villagers and even the foresters do not understand at first. Realize that this is new to them and keep in mind that they want to learn about this and that you will be able to make everything clear with patience and that there will be follow up with other camps.
Work: For one week, you will be working with the foresters close to the headquarters. You will be helping them with tasks such as making a path. While helping the foresters with their work, you will learn a lot about the park and its wildlife, and see waterfalls and wildlife. You will be spending the second week in one of the villages with foresters. Here, you will work side by side with the locals on their farms. The most important thing that we can do is to stimulate the people to work and show them it is important, by coming back every time and showing interest in their project.
Your work also includes giving the foresters and the villagers pride in their work of preserving these precious forests. Giving a compliment for their efforts is very well appreciated, as well as enjoying the company of the foresters and the villagers. This is part of the project!
Accommodation: The accommodations in the camp and in the village are very basic. You will be staying in dormitory style accommodations, as well as in the home of one of the villagers. Volunteers should bring their own mattress or hammock and mosquito net.
Location: The camp will be held more than 40 km south from Nakorn Ratchasima, the gateway to Northeastern Thailand. The camp is only about 200 km from Bangkok (meeting point) but in no way is one reminded of that fact. The National Park is a beautiful deep forest rich with animals.
Special Requirements: Deep respect for environment and the will to work on improving this in a socially active way. Participants cannot be afraid to get their hands dirty and do physically demanding work such as cutting wood, walking long trails, etc. Ideas about the problems of the park should be formed. Participation in discussions about this is expected. Further more any ideas on educational activities about the environment to organize in the village are more then welcome!

Place: Phattalung province, South of Thailand
Background: Until recently, many people from this area relied on (illegal) logging and hunting for income. Local people have begun to realize that this practice couldn't go on forever, and so greatly reduced the amount of logging and begun to collect guns to stop hunting. Local villagers are now looking at tourism to help bring income to the area, but they have no experience.
Work: Participants in this camp will be working with villagers to help them understand how to cater to Eco-friendly tourists. You are a milestone on the road to a healthy environment for them, and will show how it can bring in money for their village. Tourism is inevitable and does not need to have the negative impact on the environment and culture that we see so often. By organizing small-scale tourism in a way where damage to the environment and negative changes for the local communities can be avoided, Eco-tourism can have a positive effect on a community. A large part of this project will be demonstrating to villagers the value of their environment and culture, and the importance of taking care of these things. Please bring ideas and give the villagers some idea about what tourists (ecotourists!) do expect and need for a pleasant stay.
Be reminded that the work is only a tool to work together. So try to work on your communication skills and build up friendships. There is no need to finish anything quickly. This camp hopes to strengthen awareness and also create understanding and respect for their environment. Most villagers are encouraged by the presence of the volunteers and progress has been made. For example, they now understand how important it is to keep the village clean and that 'wild animals' (be it birds, squirrels, monkeys or bears) belong in the forest and not in the homes.
Accommodation: You will be staying in the homes of villagers. Conditions are simple and the sleeping place will be an empty room, serving as a sleeping room.
Location: The closest larger city is Phattalung, nearly 900 km south from Bangkok and the easiest connection by train. Volunteers who would like to fly from Bangkok to Southern Thailand can fly to Had Yai If communicated in advance Greenway office will assist in further travel to the camp's site.
Special Requirements: Volunteers are expected to have some ideas formed about ecotourism. The volunteers should be interested in getting to know the life in the village as well as in the forest.

Place: Ranong Province, Southern Thailand
Background: Ecotourism is an alternative to mass tourism for people who are interested in escaping the congestion and westernisation of the large cities. It promotes cultural exchange between tourists and the local population with the least possible negative impact on environment and daily life of the villages.
Homestays, rather than guesthouses, allow the community to control the number of tourists and are an attempt to prevent uncontrolled development of natural areas. Moreover the ecotourism stimulates economic activity in local villages. Visitors are encouraged to spend their money in local, family-operated shops and markets, keeping money spent there within the community. The modest sum given to the host families provides supplemental income. Due to the Greenway program many villagers are learning for the first time about the need for environmentally friendly habits and the importance of conservation of natural resources.
Work: The work will focus on making villagers aware and helping them setting up ecotourism while preserving the beautiful marine-life in the Ranong area. Excursions and attractions should be tested, homestays tried, and information recorded for future ecotourists. This information may consist of general information about the village, the waters, the surroundings, basic Thai language needed, tips for travellers, etc.… This information will be passed to Greenway staff responsible for setting up an ecotourism database in Thailand. Volunteers will introduce the villagers to ecotourism and help them understand the possibilities as well as the necessities to organize this in a culturally and environmentally friendly way.
Many times the villagers do not realize that ecotourists are interested in learning about their (rural) lifestyle. The volunteers will show interest in the aspects of their daily life, showing where future ecotourists would appreciate more information, and effective ways for the villagers to do that (without the language because they will not have a camp leader there to help them!). The volunteers should "show" the cultural differences and help the villagers understand them somewhat better in an informal, friendly way. They will also teach them some basic English needed to host. The volunteer group should initiate all of this: do not expect the villagers to come with a plan, which you should "test".
Accommodation: The accommodation will be at different locations, in a center dormitory style and in homestay families.
Location: Ranong is one of Thailand's southern provinces. Located on the coast of the Andaman Sea, 568 km south of Bangkok, the province shares border with Myanmar (Burma) and the province of Chumphon. Geographically, in addition to sixty-two islands, long expanses of sandy beaches, unspoiled forests and waterfalls and a World Sanctuary Zone, Ranong finds the Kra, the narrowest point on the Malayan Peninsula, located within its borders.
Special Requirements: Volunteers are expected to have some ideas formed about ecotourism and should have lots of initiative to implement this from the beginning. The volunteers should be interested in getting to know life in a village, Thai culture and reflecting on the cultural differences in an open minded way.

Place: Ranote, Songkhla Province, South of Thailand
Background: The Ranote camp is set up to accommodate special activities like art, sports and handicraft. Its aim is to function as an international center where the local people can walk in and out as the like and have the possibility to have international contacts.
In Thailand, there is an increasing need and interest to learn English, because people believe it will allow their children to get better jobs in a future. Working to promote an ecological awareness, and introducing new concepts for Thai people such as recycling, is very important in this country as well, in which there is not any garbage separation system and people is used to just throw the litter away or in the best case, burn it. Therefore, the main activity of the camp is teaching English, but volunteers also teach environmental education to develop awareness among the children and local people, as well as other special subjects, such as arts, handicrafts, and sports. There is a Buddhist temple close to Greenwave and there is the possibility to teach English to the monks. All volunteers in Ranote work together on other projects, such the Tuesdays teaching, when about 135 students visit the center weekly.
Work: The camp will consist of two weeks interacting with the local people in schools and in an informal way. The volunteers learn about the work and daily life of the villagers in this area and can go on excursions near the campsite, etc. The aim is to have fun (sanuk) together, learn more about each other's culture and set a good basis for future activities.
Teaching on different subjects (depending on the program), such as language, environmental issues, Eco-tourism etc. in English in a self-chosen fashion to the local village children at a primary school as well as at Greenway premises during after school activities. Developing lesson plans and ideas in the group and passing this information through for future volunteers is part of the plan to create follow up and long-term improvements. It is also expected that the volunteers bring in creative ideas for the center, for example in environmental, organizational, or programming issues.
Accommodation: You will be staying in dormitory style accommodation. Conditions are simple but will serve your basic needs. The food will be vegetarian.
Location: You can find this camp near the city of Ranote, about 150 km north of the Greenway base camp, in a rural area surrounded by shrimp farms and little villages along the beach. This camp is located just in front of the beach.
Special Requirements: You should love children, as you will be surrounded by loads of them most of the day. The ability to teach independently in a less formal way and ideas about children activities should be formed before coming.
In this camp you we prefer people not drinking and smoking.

Background: The project will consist of working closely with local people to clean up and improve the May Nam Noy (Noy River) and the canals in the vicinity. The people in the area are dependent on the Noy River water for agricultural, household and sanitation purposes. The project will help the villagers understand the importance of a clean river and serve as an example to the entire district.
Work: The camp will consist of two weeks interacting with the local people in the village. The volunteers will participate in the work and daily life of the local villagers in order to teach them better environmental practices. Volunteers will then work together with the villagers to change sanitation and waste disposal practices. Additional projects will include water-shed preservation, tree planting and improving the natural vegetation. Background: This camp is located on the beautiful base camp of Greenway. The aims of this camp are to develop friendship between the participants and the local students at the schools and to teach local students English, and more importantly, let them meet people from other parts of the world so that their mental horizons expand. You will see rural Thailand and have an opportunity to reside in a small village with the villagers and students in their home. You may expect visits from local villagers at the camp.
The project will consist of working with local students at schools, in the village or temple. There might also be work performed at the campsite in the program. This camp is centered on teaching in a non-formal way. That means when you teach in the school, you will have to conform to the local teaching methods or style, but you will be free to choose your own way of teaching and may bring your own ideas into class. You may understand that your methods for teaching are less important than your attitude toward the students. The subjects of teaching may vary depending on current projects; for example, you might use environmental issues as the subject while having students practice speaking English. Nobody expects you to teach the students to speak English fluently within two weeks, but all consider it more important for the children to have first hand direct contact with foreigners and 'open up'.
Accommodation: You will be staying in dormitory style accommodation. Conditions are simple but will serve your basic needs. The food will be vegetarian. In this camp you we prefer people not drinking and smoking.
Location: This camp is located approximately 20 km from the city of Had Yai, at the main headquarters from Greenway. It is a beautiful garden complex, located in southern rural Thailand, surrounded by rubber tree plantations.
Special Requirements: You should love children, as you will be surrounded by loads of them most of the day. The ability to teach independently in a less formal way and ideas about children activities should be formed before coming.

Place: Khrong Hoykrong, Songkhla Province, South of Thailand
Please bring ideas and give the villagers some idea about what tourists (ECO-tourists!) do expect and need for a pleasant stay.
Accommodation: You will be staying in the homes of villagers, and at the Eco-House center in dormitory accommodations. Conditions are simple and the sleeping place will be an empty room, serving as a sleeping room.
Location: This camp is located approximately 20 km from the city of Had Yai, at the main headquarters from Greenway. It is a beautiful garden complex, located in southern rural Thailand, surrounded by rubber tree plantations.
Special Requirements: Volunteers are expected to have some ideas formed about ecotourism. The volunteers should be interested in getting to know the life in the village as well as in the forest.

Place: Warim Chamrab, Ubon Ratchathani Province, Northeastern Thailand
Background: The project consists of two weeks on different locations. One week will be at the Ratachani Asoke camp and one can be at the Greenway center in the village. Both locations are focussed on agriculture, teaching and farming.
The first location: Ratachani Asoke
Ratachani Asoke is a Buddhist community that separates themselves from the normal Buddhism in Thailand. In the village everything revolves about "the good way of living" and pure Buddhism. This means utilizing self-sustainable agriculture, doing everything in an ecological friendly way, and putting no value on possessions. Here, everybody is a volunteer, wears the same clothes, wears no shoes, eats together, prepares the meals together (2 times a day) and works together. No addictions are allowed, including smoking, drinking (alcohol and coffee) and laziness. No lies will be told. This way of life can be difficult for outsiders but will be a very pure experience for all that are willing to learn and come with open mind and warm heart. The warmth of the people in the community will be a lifetime experience!
The second location: a village near Ubon Ratchathani
The second location is in a village near Ubon Ratchathani. Here you will live and work in the village together with the Greenway long-term volunteers and you will participate in the projects they have started, including English teaching to the surrounding villager.
Work: The work at the first location will focus on the principals of alternative agriculture as practiced here. There will be discussions and explanations and your input is very welcome. Besides this we will join in on daily life, which means, meditation in the early morning, preparing meals together and helping out where we can. You may live with the villagers that cooperate in this project.
At the second location you will work with the Greenway long-term volunteers and local people teaching English and environmental subjects. The final program depends on the weather, school-holidays, and the work camp-leader, special Buddhist holidays, special activities in schools in the period that you like to join the camp. Upon arrival in the camp the work camp-leader will explain the program.
Next to the 'work' schedule the workcamp leader will also take time to teach you some Thai language and inform you about Thai culture, behaviour and habits.
Accommodation: With the Asoke group the volunteers will reside in a separate house dormitory style. Volunteers should bring mosquito net and mattress if they need this. There will be a lot of interaction with the farmers and their families and home-stay can be part of the program.
In the village you will do home-stay with local families. Mosquito nets should be taken, because not all Thai families use them. Mattresses are available.
Location: The location is very rural, very close to Laos and Kampuchea. Travellers by air may use the Ubon Rachathani airport (15 km from the campsite and pickup will be arranged) and train travellers should disembark at Ubon Rachathani-Warin Chamrap station.
Special Requirements: The will to learn about self-sufficient agriculture and seeing the importance of the social and Buddhist aspect of the project besides the actual manual work is important to enjoy this project to the fullest!
