Air Canada Jet Collides with Fire Truck on Runway in NYC LaGuardia
A major emergency at New York’s LaGuardia Airport (LGA) has led to a full ground stop and a total suspension of operations after an Air Canada Express flight collided with a Port Authority fire truck late Sunday night.
At approximately 11:38 PM on Sunday, March 22, an Air Canada Express Bombardier CRJ-900 (operated by Jazz Aviation), arriving from Montreal, was taxiing toward its gate in heavy rain and fog. According to flight-tracking data, the aircraft was moving at roughly 24 mph (39 kph) when it struck a Port Authority firefighting vehicle near Runway 4.
Dramatic Air Traffic Control (ATC) audio captured the moments leading up to the impact. A controller was heard shouting, “Stop, stop, stop! Truck 1, stop!” before the collision occurred. Moments later, the tower was forced to order multiple incoming flights to “go around” and abort their landings.

Injuries and casualties at LaGuardia Airport
The situation remains critical as emergency teams work on-site:
- Severe Injuries: The pilot and co-pilot of the Air Canada flight sustained serious injuries and were transported to a nearby hospital.
- First Responders: At least four Port Authority officers (firefighters/emergency personnel) were seriously injured; reports indicate some have sustained broken limbs and are in stable but critical condition.
- Passengers: Nearly 100 passengers were on board the flight. While many are being evaluated for shock and minor injuries, there are currently no reports of life-threatening injuries among the passengers.
- Fatalities: Some early, unconfirmed media reports have suggested the possibility of fatalities, but officials from the FAA and Port Authority have not yet confirmed any deaths.
As of Monday morning, LGA is closed and all flight operations are suspended. The FAA has issued a ground stop for all planes destined for LaGuardia.
