California Recognized March 25, 2025, as Greek Independence Day
The California State Assembly has unanimously passed Assembly Concurrent Resolution 35, recognizing March 25, 2025, as Greek Independence Day throughout the state.
This resolution, authored by Assemblymember Diane Papan, commemorates the 204th anniversary of Greece’s rebellion against Ottoman rule and celebrates the enduring principles of democracy and freedom shared between Greece and the United States.
62-year-old Papan was born in Millbrae, California, to Greek-American Lou Papan, a longtime member and former Speaker of the State Assembly.
Greek Independence Day holds profound significance, not only for the Greek community, but also for all Californians. It serves as a reminder of the rich cultural heritage and the remarkable contributions made by Greek Americans to the state’s diverse tapestry.
“As we commemorate Greek Independence Day, we honor the bravery and resilience of the Greek people throughout history,” said Papan. “Their struggle for independence and their steadfast commitment to democratic values continue to inspire us.”
California recognizes shared values between the United States and Greece
The resolution acknowledges the pivotal role played by Greece in shaping democratic principles, with the ancient Greeks laying the groundwork for modern democracy. It also highlights the sacrifices made by Greek Americans who have integrated into mainstream society and excelled in various fields, including finance, technology, law, medicine, and the arts.
March 25, 2025, was be observed as “Greek Independence Day: A Day of Celebration of Greek and American Democracy” across California. This designation reaffirms the enduring friendship and shared values between the United States and Greece, emphasizing the importance of democracy, freedom, and human rights.
The California State Assembly encouraged all Californians to join in celebrating Greek Independence Day and to reflect on the profound impact of Greek culture and heritage on the state’s identity.
The United Hellenic American Societies of California have announced that Greek Independence Day will be celebrated on March 30 at Union Square in San Francisco.

Trump hosts Greek Independence Day celebration at the White House
On Monday, US President Donald Trump hosted a special event at the White House to celebrate Greek Independence Day, joined by representatives from Greek-American organizations and church officials.
The Trump administration has maintained strong ties with the Greek-American community. Upon taking the podium, Trump addressed the audience, saying, “We love you all.” His remark was followed by a warm greeting of the Greek and Cypriot ambassadors to Washington.
Trump went on to praise the contributions of Greek-Americans in his administration, highlighting that while the world was facing challenges, things have improved under his leadership. He expressed gratitude to the Greek-Americans working in his administration.
He also acknowledged the enduring legacy of the Greek-American community, adding, “Perhaps the greatest gift we have inherited from that amazing culture is our incredible Greek-American community that is now more than three million.”
The president highlighted the importance of groups that helped his campaign like “Greeks for Trump” and individuals such as Christos Marafatsos and Rep. Gus Bilirakis, noting their continued support.
