An iconic Greek restaurant and deli in Los Angeles, the beloved Papa Christo’s Greek Grill and Market, is shutting down after more than seven decades in business.

The announcement was made on Thursday, to inform customers that this will be the last month they can enjoy shopping or dining at Papa Christo’s.

Owner Christos Chrysovergis, also known as Chrys Chrys, now in his eighties, told the Greek Reporter that one of his two daughters might want to continue running the business with him but they would need to find a smaller place to relocate as their established location has become to difficult to handle at his age.

Greek restaurant becomes Los Angeles landmark

The current owner, Chrys Chrys, is the second generation running Papa Christo’s Greek restaurant and deli in Los Angeles.

The business has been standing at 2771 West Pico Boulevard in the Pico-Union neighbourhood of the city for a staggering 77 years, becoming a local landmark.

Papa Cristo’s Greek Grill was awarded the title of “Best Greek Restaurant in Los Angeles” by Zagat in 2011, and it was the establishment which provided all the food that was shown in Nia Vardalos’ 2002 romantic comedy movie “My Big Fat Greek Wedding.”
In 2021, American rapper Ja Rule filmed an one-minute advertisement for Papa Christos’, where the entertainer professed his immense love for Greek food.
And less than a year ago, in June 2024, an advertisment of Papa Christo’s featuring NY Knicks’ Player Isaiah Hartenstein aired on the Jimmy Kimmel Live TV show.

Papa Christos’ seven decade legacy

“My father, Sam Chrys, opened the doors to our family business in October 1948, and from that very first day, it has been filled with love, hard work and our local community,” Chrys writes in his emotional closure announcement on Facebook.

“My mother, Annie Chrys, stood by his side, as he poured his heart into building the foundation of what would become a true Greek landmark in Los Angeles,” he adds.

Chrys felt blessed to carry his father’s legacy, as C & K Importing and Papa Cristo’s “grew into a place where flavors, friendships, families and memories came together under one roof.”

According to the announcement, the iconic Los Angeles eatery is scheduled to shut its doors on May 4, 2025.

In Chrys’ own words, “we will close this chapter with our hearts full of love and gratitude for the incredible community that has supported us for generations.”

Papa Christo’s end could signal a new begining

However, Papa Christo’s closure announcement does leave some room for customers to hope for a later revival.
“After 77 unforgettable years on the corner of Pico and Normandie, it’s time for me to hang up my apron and for us to say goodbye – for now,” Chrys says.
“To all of our cherished customers and devoted staff, I say eucharisto (thank you!). You are my family, and Papa Cristo’s will always be a part of yours.”
In a cryptic postscript, the iconic Greek restaurant owner concludes: “The story of Papa Cristo’s doesn’t end here — exciting things are coming.”
