Suspect Arrested for Murder of Conservative Activist Charlie Kirk
A Utah man has been arrested as a suspect in connection with the fatal shooting of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, ending a two-day manhunt that drew national attention. Authorities said the suspect, identified as Tyler Robinson, was taken into custody late Thursday night following a tip from a family member.
Officials said the family member told a friend that Robinson had either confessed or hinted at being involved in the killing. The friend contacted the Washington County Sheriff’s Office, which alerted federal authorities. FBI Director Kash Patel confirmed that Robinson was arrested at 10 PM local time on Thursday.
Robinson is accused of shooting Kirk while he was speaking at Utah Valley University on Wednesday afternoon. The gunman opened fire during the event, then fled the scene.
Law enforcement agencies launched a wide-scale search, releasing surveillance images of the suspect dressed in black and carrying a backpack. Footage also showed him running across a campus rooftop immediately after the shooting.
Timeline of the suspect’s movements and arrest
As investigators pieced together Robinson’s movements, they reviewed additional video from campus security cameras. Utah Gov. Spencer Cox said Robinson arrived on campus around 8:30 AM local time on Wednesday, driving a gray Dodge Challenger.
At that time, he was seen wearing a maroon T-shirt, light-colored shorts, and a black hat, different from the outfit captured after the shooting.
Tyler Robinson’s own father turned him in.
He did the right thing, but imagine how gutting it must be to know that your son committed such an inconceivable evil and you had to turn him in. pic.twitter.com/qbYnSGJNt3

Cox also revealed that investigators spoke with Robinson’s roommate, who provided messages allegedly sent by Robinson on the platform Discord.
In those messages, Robinson reportedly mentioned retrieving a rifle from a drop location, noting it was wrapped in a towel. A weapon matching that description, a Mauser bolt-action rifle with a mounted scope, was later found by authorities.
Several bullets were recovered, some bearing handwritten messages. A spent casing was marked with a cryptic phrase that remains unexplained. One unfired round had the words “Hey fascist! Catch!” with arrow symbols. Another included lyrics from Bella Ciao, an anti-fascist Italian resistance song. A third casing carried a vulgar message.
Political motive and national response
Gov. Cox said a family member noted Robinson had become more politically driven in recent years.
At a recent dinner, Robinson mentioned that Kirk would be speaking at the university and expressed dislike for his political views. The family member reportedly described Kirk as someone who, in their opinion, promoted hate.
President Donald Trump, speaking Friday morning on Fox & Friends, confirmed that a suspect had been detained. He stated that he hopes Robinson is found guilty and receives the death penalty.
The suspect arrested in the Charlie Kirk shooting is currently being held while authorities continue the investigation. Charges have not yet been formally announced.
