President Donald Trump filed a lawsuit and a defamation claim against the BBC, Britain’s public broadcaster, on Monday, seeking at least $5 billion in damages.

The action stems from the BBC’s broadcast of edited excerpts of his speech on January 6, 2021, before his supporters attacked the federal Capitol in the US capital.

Trump argues that the way the excerpts were edited made it appear as if he was urging his supporters to go with him to Congress and “fight like hell,” while omitting the phrase where he called for the mobilization to be peaceful.

His supporters later launched a bloody invasion of the Capitol to formally obstruct the certification of his Democratic rival Joe Biden’s victory in the 2020 presidential election.

The BBC has already publicly apologized to the former US President, acknowledged a “lapse in judgment,” and admitted that the editing created the false impression that he directly called for violence. However, the broadcaster added that it did not believe there was a legal basis for the lawsuit.

The BBC is funded by a mandatory license fee paid by UK viewers. Legal experts in Britain note that any compensation payment to the Republican magnate would be politically very sensitive, in addition to the financial burden.

Resignations and legal arguments at the BBC

Facing one of the most serious crises in its 103-year history, the BBC‘s management also stated that it has no plans to re-broadcast the documentary in question on any of its platforms.

The dispute over the edited footage, which aired on the BBC’s Panorama program shortly before the November 2024 US presidential elections, triggered a public relations crisis for the network, culminating in the resignations of its two top executives.

Trump’s lawyers argue that the documentary caused severe damage to his reputation and image, along with colossal financial losses.
