Tensions are rising between the United States and its European allies as President Donald Trump reignites his controversial push to acquire Greenland, just days before his arrival at the World Economic Forum in Davos.

His remarks have stirred diplomatic unease in Europe and redirected the focus of Davos, where global leaders had expected to discuss trade and cooperation, not territorial disputes.

In a series of late-night posts, Trump again asserted that Greenland was essential to both national and global security, linking its strategic value to recent moves by the United Kingdom to transfer sovereignty of the Chagos Islands to Mauritius.

Trump criticized the UK for what he called a security mistake, saying the decision signaled weakness and justified his renewed interest in Greenland.

The British government defended the agreement, emphasizing that operational control of the U.S.-UK base on Diego Garcia remains intact and supported by allies.

European leaders weigh response to US tariffs and rhetoric

European officials, already strained by trade tensions with Washington, are divided in their response. Some are pushing for calm and dialogue, while others are considering stronger measures, including retaliation for new U.S. tariffs that appear aimed at countries opposing Trump’s Greenland ambitions.

French President Emmanuel Macron, in a message confirmed by a French official, expressed confusion over Trump’s Greenland efforts while affirming agreement on other issues like Syria and Iran. Later in Davos, Macron warned that the world is moving toward one where power overrides rules, and international law is disregarded.

“It’s … a shift towards a world without rules, where international law is trampled underfoot and where the only law that seems to matter is that of the strongest,” Macron said.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen accused Trump of violating a trade pact meant to prevent tariff escalation. She called for a firm and united European response, stating that Europe must adapt to a shifting global order.

American presence dominates as Davos atmosphere shifts

Trump’s visit has altered the atmosphere in Davos. The USA House, marking the 250th anniversary of American independence, has taken over prominent spaces previously used by tech firms. Inside a repurposed church, U.S. Cabinet officials are addressing guests in a setting filled with American symbols.

Despite originally planning to focus his speech on housing affordability, a senior White House official said Trump would also emphasize the need for the West to move beyond economic stagnation.

He is expected to speak Wednesday, followed by a signing ceremony for his proposed Board of Peace, a global initiative that would charge countries $1 billion for permanent membership.

While some nations are open to the plan, others worry it could undermine the United Nations. Meanwhile, Russian officials, barred from the forum since 2022, have returned in a limited capacity, signaling potential opportunities amid NATO friction.

With Greenland at the center of debate, Davos opens under the shadow of renewed geopolitical friction between Trump, Europe and the future of Arctic security.
