 IJGD 4305 Baiersbronn (BW) 19/06 – 10/07 ENVI 15V “Baiersbronn—there doesn’t get any more Black Forest than this!” The town of Baiersbronn lies in the middle of the character rich landscape of the northern Black Forest. The forest service of Klosterreichenbach cares for the large forested area around Baiersbronn and has many activities for you to work on. Your main duty will be to help monitor a type of beetle (the so-called Borkenkaefer). You will work on other forest protection projects and on a forest hut. The staff of the forest service will teach you about the forest ecosystem. An excellent hiking trail system allows you to experience the natural area around the camp.

IJGD 4423 Osterwieck (ST) 18/06 – 08/07 KIDS 15V In Osterwieck, a small town of half-timbered houses in the Harz mountains foreland you will have the opportunity to work with children and young people. Your work includes playing games, drawing, sketching and other forms of creative work as well as dance and music. You will show German children what your home countries’ culture is like, thereby paying special attention to the needs of different age groups. Work will be carried out in municipal institutions such as a kinder garden and a day nursery for children aged 1-10. If you want to work with young people who attend High School (“Gymnasium”) you will have to prepare for a multi-cultural theatre-, dance or music project. You will rehearse your show with the young people during the optional afternoon classes and will stage it at the end of the camp. Bring your own ideas for the projects, including material and precise ideas. The project is organized by the Catholic church, your accommodation will be in the local parish hall.

The organization for evangelical youth has organized a large and colourful summer festival for youth and residents of the town of Schweicheln for many years. Your support will be necessary to make this festival happen. You will help prepare the festival publicity, creative decorations and signs and build the stands and booths. Your creativity and initiative will be utilized. You will prepare a game or craft program for the children and youth. You can also share your musical talents if you wish. You will also be able to share your sports interests of soccer, volleyball, canoeing, and rock climbing. This summer festival takes place on the first weekend of July. There are also many great excursion possibilities to the university cities of Bielefeld and Osnabrueck, to Porta Westfalica and to the Teutoburger Forest.

You will support the Abendsonne staff at the distribution of meals and help the old people with eating. You will also read to the residents, take walks with them (either by foot or with people in wheelchairs). Moreover, you will organize activities like games, physical exercise, visits at other places, etc. Your help is furthermore needed with the care of bedridden people: they will be happy if you make music with them (instruments, singing), talk to them and play games. You are invited to organize a leisure programme with an international flair for the residents.

The group will work on a variety of natural, geographical, and cultural protection projects, including caring for humid biotopes, young vegetation, and walking paths. In addition you will work on care and renovation of the “Eifelhaus” and its surrounding area. Bicycles will be provided for your use during the camp.

IJGD 4111 Borna – Birkenhain (BLN) 03/07 – 25/07 ENVI 12V The Association for Nature Development in Borna Birkenhain is situated on the base of a wooded hill amidst beautiful hiking trails and near an idyllic lake. The tasks of the association include public relations work, landscape protection and the protection of species in the south Leipzig region. You will help with the care of meadows (mowing), of biotopes and do landscape conservation work on the grounds of the “Ecological Station”. Bikes will be provided and can be used for trips. Life will be very simple and the work will be hard, but the mining landscape south of Leipzig is beautiful and you are well connected to Leipzig by public transport. 
Accommodation: in tents, there is a contractor’s shed with cooking facilities, an open fireplace and a large clay oven. Sanitary facilities (showers) are found at the “Ecological Station” in 200 m distance.

IJGD 4228 Bremen I (HB) 03/07 – 25/07 FEST 15VIJGD 4229 Bremen II (HB) 03/07 – 25/07 FEST 15VFrom July 8-18 2004 about 350 choirs from many countries around the world will come to Bremen to participate in the largest choir concert in the world. About 15,000 singers have practiced for months for this concert and want to make it the best presentation possible. Your job in Bremen is to make sure that the event runs smoothly. You will care for the choirs: after an orientation at the site you will split into two groups or individuals to care for the groups. You will support you choir, e.g. making sure they are on the concert stage on time or find the way to their meals. You should feel comfortable working with people and be able to take charge in a group. The work times will be concentrated during the days of the choir Olympics, but after the choir Olympics the workcamp group will have about a week to do something together.

Here is the solution: take part in the summer theatre academy “Zeitschneise” (clearing time) in the three country area of Germany-Austria-Czech Republic. An Austrian forest, theater teacher, and a stage director from a theatre in Prague will take you to a place between times. You will learn different non-verbal expressions to put together a theater piece. Previous experience with art and/or theater is important. Here in the middle of the large forest area in Europe, the Bavarian Forest, you will develop a stage program to perform three times in the region.

IJGD 4119 Hobrechtsfelde (BR) 03/07 – 25/07 ENVI 10VThe nature park “Barnim” lies northeast of Berlin and exhibits its rich changing landscape in a variety of ways. In the middle of the park lies the historical preservation landmark “Gussiedlung Hobrechtsfelde” (good settlement Hobrechts’ fields). It is leftover from the former Riesel field landscape and will be used as a relaxation area near Berlin. This ongoing project hopes to raise the value of land in Hobrechtsfelde through organized work efforts. You will help build benches on bike and hiking trails, clear old weeks, or place signs along pathways. You will have the opportunity to go hiking or biking (bikes will be provided) in your free-time.

IJGD 4221 Meldorf (SH) 03/07 – 25/07 ENVI 15VA little ways outside of Meldorf, sitting along behind the dike, lies an information center called “Wattwurm” for Schleswig-Holstein’s national park Wattenmeer (mud flats). The group will build a “barrier free” (handicap-accessible) nature experience area on the piece of land. The main project will be to build a wood plank walkway that will be about 400 meters long. You will build the wheelchair walkway, which will be built over graves, through a forest of reeds, willows, and shrubs. The workgroup will be led by a carpenter. Those members of the group who have artistic talents will have the opportunity to work on wood carving and the formation of the nature experience station. This is a great camp for people who like to swim in the sea and watch sunsets.

IJGD 4207 St. Andreasberg (NS) 03/07 – 25/07 RENO 15VIn the Harz mountain area lies a network of small lakes and moats or water trenches that were previously used to run energy to the mountains. The workcamp will work on the restoration of a monument, clear around a supporting wall, redo a fence by replacing broken pieces, and carpenter work on a bridge. The group will also work to protect the natural vegetation by the lakes. This work is strenuous, so it would be good if you are in good shape. The group will have an automobile for making excursions. 
Accommodation: in a ski hut next to one of the lakes. Showers will be at the hot baths in St. Andreasberg.

IJGD 4113 Westhavelland (BR) 03/07 – 25/07 ENVI 14VLarge lakes, wide lowlands, wooded hills and small villages with half-timbered and brick buildings are characteristic of the Naturpark Westhavelland region. Many endangered plant and animal species find room to live in this thinly populated area. The region has international importance for waterfowl and the birds of the tideland. You will work in two groups: in the nature protection area doing trailwork, and in the Großderschau parish house. Your work will be mainly simple craftsman’s work, e. g. working with spade and shovel, sawing, nailing and screwing. Immediately next to your accommodation there is a lake fit for swimming. In your leisure time you can explore the nature protection area and get to know the flora and fauna. Accommodation: in a school in the village of Hohennauen

IJGD 4242 Kiel (SH) 03/07 – 01/08 KIDS 15VImmediately on the banks of the Kieler Förde (the Kiel fjord) you can find the Falckenstein Youth Camp, which served as an accommodation for the 1972 Olympic Games participants. On the vast grounds near the water annual play schemes for 1500 children take place. You will assist with the care of the children. Each week will be dedicated to a certain motto, e. g. Indian Life. Together with the kids you will play, do handicrafts, masquerade etc. The play scheme will run for four weeks. During the first three weeks you will do the full-time on-the-spot-support. The fourth week will be your leisure time, you can plan activities with your group. Accommodation: in one of the houses of the former Olympic village

IJGD 4314 Frittlingen (BW) 10/07 – 31/07 ENV 16VFrittlingen, a small village with 2,200 residents, lies in the foothills of the Swabian Alps in a rich geographic region. The group will work together with the water directorate to preserve the streams and forest. The work will include water purification, pruning shrubs and trees, and protecting young trees. In your free-time you can make excursions to Stuttgart and the Bodensee (Lake Constance) or hiking in the Swabian Alps. You will also have many great opportunities to meet the youth of the area.

IJGD 4422 Halle (ST) 10/07 – 31/07 CONS/KIDS/ENVI 14V The focus of this camp is caring for children and youth. There are large garden plots to start that the children use in their free-time. You will work with the staff of the AWO Erziehungshilfe Halle gGmbH to plant the garden, design a play surface for games, work on a pond, make chairs or benches out of natural materials and building a terrace for sun protection. If it is raining you will work on renovating the kindergarten. The youth will participate in the projects, as well as in free-time activities planned for everyone.. There are cultural activities in the city of Halle and other possibilities in the area.

For the most part, you will clear hiking paths from overgrown brush, put up new game fences and pull down the old ones and you will also repair some of the old fences. Moreover, you will take care of young trees and work with wood. There is also a youth centre which needs some maintenance. Kaufering is a scenic village in upper Bavaria (Oberbayern) offering various possibilities for trips, e. g. to Munich and Augsburg.

Your work will include clearing waterways and trails, maintenance of a nature path, and painting. You will also trim branches high in the trees, help with the care of a biotope. You will have the opportunity to participate in many sports, hiking trips, and other trips in the Harz mountains.

IJGD 4308 Weilheim (BY) 10/07 – 31/07 ENVI 16V Weilheim in Oberbayern lies in the geographically beautiful “Five Lakes Region.” The group will ecological protection and care work together with the farmers of the city of Weilheim. In order to vary the work you are will also work on the banks of the lake (where you can swim during your free-time) and repair park benches. In addition, there is renovation of a forest where you will care for the Weilheimer moss. There are many excursion possibilities from this area, e.g. swimming, the Ammerschlucht (gorge), moors and straw fields, convents and churches, plus travel to Munich or Garmisch-Partenkirchen by train.

IJGD 4403 Zella – Mehlis (TH) 10/07 – 31/07 ENVI 15V The 1000 year-old village of Zella-Mehlis lies in the southern part of the Thuringen forest—an active cultural landscape with sports, cultural and business opportunities. There is also a monument protection on the grounds a former tool factory. Today Cosmocolor has their headquarters in the factory buildings, with a classical villa and a big park with grottos and tombs. The workcamp group will take care of the monuments in the park, as well as other activities for the public. You will help with these projects, as well as working on a pathway, clearing dead wood, and other shrubs. Thos who have lust to work in the freedom of nature and do strenuous work will have the opportunity to experience an interesting piece of culture and landscape.

Your creativity and imagination have no boundaries: your will plan, build, paint, and furnish the wagon. Bring your ideas, suggestions, and tips to the camp. You will also be able to meet with the youth who will use the meeting place. You should also bring your ideas for the youth meeting place’s website. The group will have a big end of camp party to present the “mobile youth meeting place.” Algermissen is located close to the city of Hildesheim.

Your group will paint, do small repairs, and make the area more beautiful with new plants. Please bring your creativity. There is the possibility that you will be able to actively participate in designing structures for the playground.

Cooking: done by the group The youth from the area come to the center to learn and use the free-time activities. The city of Bienenbuettel is celebrating its 1000 year anniversary in 2004, providing many events. The cities of Lueneburg, Uelzen and Hamburg and the “Heidepark” in Soltau are all easily reached by train. The train station is only 500 meters by walking path from the youth center.

The group’s project is to work with the people of the city of Wismar to organize and complete a children’s play project with the theme “Play in the Water”. During the first week of the workcamp you will have time to plan and in the following weeks you will play with children from Wismar. 
Accommodation: You will stay in the youth center in the city section of Wendorf, which is close to the Baltic sea (www.schwalbennest-wismar.de).

Location: Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. Wismar is 30km north of Schwerin and lies between Luebeck and Rostock. It is directly on the sea with wonderful landscape. There are many free-time and excursion options, for example to the cities of Lubeck and Rostock and the Island Poel.

IJGD 4231 Hemdingen (SH) 10/07 – 01/08 ENV 12V North of Hamburg lie the scenic “Himmelmoor” fens. Through your work you will contribute to the preservation of this landscape. You will build dams, close drainage ditches, remove non-native trees (esp. birches, which dehydrate the moor). Thus the landscape will be restored to its natural state and will become a biotope for endemic animal and plant species. Additionally, you will do some light forestry work. The work is strenuous, but you will have a lot of fresh air! Hemdingen has about 1500 residents and is in a geographically beautiful location.

IJGD 4210 Irenensee (NS) 10/07 – 01/08 ENVI 15VA family vacation center is located between two geographically protected areas in the relaxation park Irenen Lake. You will work on a forest learning path and a sensory path in the neighboring forest area. This will include working with soil and wood. The most physically strenuous work will be done by machines. There is a small island on the lake. You will be able to swim, play beach volleyball, and use the Bistro at the campground on the island. Bicycles will be provided for trips in the area. You can travel by train to the bird park Walsrode, the Heidepark Soltau or the cities of Hamburg, Bremen and Hannover.

IJGD 4224 Luebeck II (SH) 10/07 – 01/08 RENO 15VIn the middle of the nature protection area of Wakenitz, the “Amazon of the North” lies the “small lake.” The group will work to separate the sand and grass. On about 50 meters of bank the group must replace old tree trunks with young trees. In addition to these main duties there will be many other small renovation projects to work on. You will also help children with their free-time activity program. The old marine city of Luebeck and the nearby Baltic Sea offer many free-time activities.

IJGD 4117 Potsdam – Sanssouci (BR) 10/07 – 01/08 ENVI 10V The Prussian Palaces and Gardens Fund (Stiftung Preußische Schlösser und Gärten) takes care of the numerous historical parks and palaces in the Berlin/Brandenburg region. The centre of a this man-made landscape which has been developing over the centuries is Potsdam with its various historical parks, including Sanssouci Palace and Gardens. You will be working in these gardens and will have the opportunity to get an insight into the care and conservation of a historical park landscape. In Charlottenhof Park, designed 1838 by P. J. Lenné, you will take care of flowerbeds, paths and lawns and thereby help to conserve the garden. Since you will be working at different work sites, you will learn a lot about the various gardens and parks. Accommodation: in a parish house (Evangelische Stern-Kirchengemeinde),

IJGD 4412 Naumburg (ST) 10/07 – 01/08 RENO/ART 15V The city of Naumburg and the education organization “Arbeit und Leben e.V.” (work and life) create a center for historical trade and building materials for the residents of the city on the historically preserved property of the former slaughterhouse. You will work for two weeks helping with the historical building on the Hallentract and cleaning old building materials. During the third week you will take part in different workshops with the youth of Naumburg. You can be creative during the workshops and present the products you make at the closing festival for the camp. Artistic leaders will teach you about floor mosaics, textiles, and drums. You will also have the opportunity to use different mediums to document the camp, including making an Internet site. You will also have time to experience the wonderful landscape of the northernmost wine country in German and the historical city of Naumburg.

IJGD 4213 Rodewald (NS) 10/07 – 01/08 RENO 13VIn the town of Rodewald a former doctor’s house is being renovated into a youth and cultural centre. Although it is still not complete, it has developed into a beloved meeting place for youth. In the house and the attached park there are many projects to work on: building a wood floor, new sanitary facilities, and installing electricity in the garden. You will be led by appropriate trades-people. The house is surrounded by a beautiful park which is being used – even during renovation time – for arts projects and events.

Cooking: done by the group itself. You will have bikes which will help you to do the shopping and explore the surroundings. The new swimming area and sports facilities are nearby and can be used daily.

Hard-working hearty hands are important, so that blackberry bushes and birth trees do not overtake the land and the hills of juniper and moors maintain their character. IJGD 4370 Dortmund (NW) 17/07 – 07f/08 KIDS 12VThe Erlebniswelt Fredenbaum, an organization within the youth office for the city of Dortmund, is organizing a vacation program for children and youth from 4-16 years old. The center of the Erlebniswelt Fredenbaum is the largest Indian tent in the world, “Big Tipi” which was the former children’s and youth platform at EXPO 2000 in Hannover. The children will spend their free-time in the Big Tipi and on the 22000 qm of land surrounding it. After the first few days of introduction the group will work with different parts of the project: planning games, climbing and other sport and hand-work activities.

This is going to be turned into an ecologically oriented meeting and education centre for children and young people. Part of the grounds will be turned into a nature adventure playground with many attractive play facilities, e. g. a foot-feel-path, a mud landscape, a hedge maze, an odor hill, tactile experience boxes, a magic mountain with wind chimes, wooden animals etc. The association is organizing a two-week vacation program for about 120 children ages 4-12. During the first week of the workcamp the group will prepare for the vacation program. During the last two weeks you will have fun doing crafts and playing games with the children. You will be responsible for the preparation and realisation of this play scheme which will end with a big goodbye party. Bring lots of play and handicraft ideas! This is the seventh international workcamp in the Storkow peace village and it will be carried out in cooperation with an old people’s home. You will take care of the outer grounds of the home, taking care of green spaces and patches of forest. Moreover, you will do light clearance jobs, taking care of flower beds, hedges and lawns. In the peace village some renovation work is planned, e. g. painting the outer walls and wooden panelling. During your leisure time you can use the cultural and sports facilities of the peace village, make bike-, boat- or hiking trips and go swimming in the nearby lakes/swimming pools.

The motto of the play scheme will be “The Pharaohs Empire”. In cooperation with local staff you will prepare this play scheme and take part in its realisation. With your help, the children will live like Egyptians and turn the playground into an Egyptian village. They will build mini pyramids, make Egyptian clothes and jewellery, Pharaohs crowns, build mini pyramids and make hieroglyphics, etc. The closing events will be a big Egyptian sun party. Moreover, the children will play, do handicrafts and make trips. Your creativity is highly welcome. During the first week the project will be prepared and it will take place during the second and third week. There are various possibilities for leisure time activities, bikes will be provided.

You will work in small groups with the children and staff of the youth center to do performances such as clowns, acrobatics, pantomimes, juggling, etc. There will be no boundaries for your creativity and fantasy. During the breaks you will help the children with games and crafts. Finally, you will help the children with a performance on “Pieces of Art” for their parents. There are also physically and mentally handicapped children who take part in the play scheme, accompanied by persons who look after them. Your own ideas for the play scheme are very welcome, e. g. ideas for circus tricks, stunts or feats, dances, games, building musical instruments, designing costumes, etc. During the third week you will do some reconstruction work on a playground. In cooperation with municipal staff you will redesign the ground in a more natural fashion. This includes the building of a mud play area and a vegetable and herb garden. You will also put up wicker fences and design a multi-sensual experience trail. Possibly you may build a hill with a crawling tunnel as well. Work will be physically demanding, but also creative! Creativity is especially needed with the decoration of the outer walls of the buildings. In Krefeld, there are various cultural and leisure facilities and you can take trips to the Lower Rhine region, to Cologne, Düsseldorf or the Ruhr region. IJGD 4238 Luebeck I (SH) 24/07 – 15/08 ARCH 12V On the “Roter Hahn” construction playground you will experience what Viking Life was like about 1,000 years ago. The playground operator is the only association in Germany that unites the operation of construction playgrounds and the idea of re-building historic Viking and Slavic houses from around the year 1,000. Last year, the Haithabu House (5x18 m) was reconstructed. This year the group will reconstruct a smaller house next to the Haithabu House. You will do all of the work with handtools and techniques like they used 1000 years ago. You will erect large pillars by hand, build walls, plaster, and much more. During the camp there will be a large Viking Summerfest, which will celebrate its fifth year.

In addition to these interesting and diverse tasks you can explore the Harz region together with the Forestry Office staff. Substantial hikes, e. g. to the Brocken Mountain, are possible as well. Your work will include building and maintenance of a visitor’s information trail, cutting brush to clear the hiking paths, and caring for young vegetation and streams. In the Geo-Park you will work on a reference table. You will also have the opportunity to work on the archaeological site of a former Roman bath and temple area. Leisure activities include swimming in a local open air swimming pool, hiking on beautiful hiking paths, a visit to the “geo-park” and daytrips to Cologne, Trier or Luxemburg. You will have plenty of opportunity to meet local people your age. You will be staying at a school where you can also participate in creative and artistic activities.

There are many free-time activities in the gymnasium where you will be staying. You can also swim in the nearby Jersleber Lake or take part in cultural activities in Magdeburg.

In the vineyards between the two towns you will help to maintain and improve a reptiles’ habitat. There will also be a mapping of the habitat led by a scientist. An expert will show you how to erect and restore quarry walls, which serve as a nursery for the rare wall lizards since they have many gaps and crevices. Moreover, you will care for vineyards lying idle. There are various leisure time facilities in the nearby cities of Wiesbaden and Mainz like boat trips on the river Rhine or wine tastings.

You will work with wood, build walls, and a straw roof. You will also produce everyday objects such as pots and pans to show life at that time. You will have an educational session when you will learn about the methods used at that time. The village of Titz-Hoellen lies in the three city region of Cologne, Duesseldorf, and Aachen. You will have the opportunity to travel to the Netherlands or Belgium if you wish.

This workcamp can be physically demanding but takes place in a beautiful landscape. As a “project within the project” some of the participants can translate a nature information leaflet into different languages.

IJGD 4223 Hamdorf (SH) 31/07 – 22/08 ENVI 12VTo work in nature and live a sustainable life in nature is the motto of this camp - nature conservation tasks in a moor and heath landscape is what actually awaits you in Hamdorf. You will refill drainage ditches and remove non-native trees, thus restoring the landscape to its natural state. Moreover, there is a herd of Galloway cattle whose fences have to be put down and build up in other places. The cattle mainly serve landscape conservation. You will be supported by staff from the local forestry office who can teach you a lot about the nature in Hamdorf.

You will plaster, build a fence, place benches, and help plant in the garden. In and around the surrounding timbered houses you can perform small restoration projects. Bicycles will be provided for trips in the area, e.g. bike and hiking trails on the Wester, and trips to the city of Nienburg. You will learn some of the local dialect, Plattdeutsch, through seeing theatre performances on the open-air stage.

School classes visit the farm every year in order to learn about ecological farming and life on a farm. During their stay, they are accommodated in a guest house. Your task will be to renovate the guest house. You will work at the construction of a kitchen, showers and an outer covering made of larch wood. Moreover, the construction of five grass-roof cabins is on the schedule. You will work with wood and other ecological building materials. You are free and welcome to engage yourself at every-day work on the farm as well. Products from the farm will be provided for your self-catering.

You will work there with the German youth hostel group Thueringen e.V. on the land of a former saw- and grain mill which is now the home of the youth hostel “Froschmuehle.” You will build a fence and chairs or benches. An experience and work room with the theme “our forest” is also planned. You will finish the information billboards, collect information materials and prepare the photos so that visitors can read and learn about the area. In addition, you can teach workshops to the children on holiday during the first week. Please bring your ideas, games, and crafts from your home country with you.

IJGD 4362 Bielefeld (NW) 07/08 – 28/08 CONS 15VYour task is to renovate and rebuild a playground in order to make it again attractive to the local children. You must prepare the playground for the renovation by removing the old play structures and repairing them. You will put up the old and new structures, edge the sandbox and the rinks with railroad sleepers, model a mound and do other kinds of landscaping work on the playground. The new structures will be mainly made of wood. This project will partly involve strenuous physical work. The creative part is to paint the playground equipment. Finally, there will be a big playground opening party together wit the children and their parents which you will prepare and organize. You will be accommodated in a big apartment, but also in tents at the central youth center. The youth center has billiard tables, table tennis, and other activities. Bielefeld is a university city and offers various cultural and other free-time activities, e. g. hiking in the forestry Teutoburger Wald area.

You will maintain fences of orchards and secure trees, build a sheep barn and take care of neglected grassland. The putting up of sign posts is also part of your work. During the camp, you will surely learn a lot about the ecology of the region. Freising lies in the river Isar valley, not far from Munich and the Alps. Since it is situated near Hallertau, the world’s largest hop growing area, there are load of nice beer gardens around.

In the youth education place of the Hessian labor union you will build 20 creative rooms in what is now an empty building. Some of the basics are already in place, but the rest is open to your ideas and creativity. There are many excursion possibilities in the nature park or to cities such as Frankfurt or Wuerzburg.

You will be helping the office for mentally handicapped children and youth to lead a summer vacation program. You will work with the staff members of the office to organize different stations for the vacation program. You will be in contact with the youth for the entire day. You will participate in games, art, crafts, and excursions as a part of the vacation program. You will also help with the formation of both a mural and a bike shed on the property. There are many great excursions to Cologne, Duesseldorf, Bonn, and the Rhine River close to the workcamp.

In the district of Dagstuhl sits the castle Dagstuhl built around 1270. The group will care for and develop the castle by helping with the walls and bridge, and by building a new walking path. You will also have the chance to visit market from the Middle Ages. In addition, the group will make a CD-ROM to document the experiences and work of the camp. The group will also help plan and participate in a festival at the castle at the end of the camp. You will have bicycles and a small bus to use for free-time activities and excursions to a nearby lake or towns, e.g. Saarbruecken, Trier, Luxemburg or France.

Moreover, you will do mowing and irrigation work. There will be bikes for you and since Munich lies nearby and there a good public transport connections you will have plenty of opportunity to explore this Bavarian city and its surroundings.

The group will remove old stones, clean them, replace them, and mow. The war victims are German and non-German soldiers and civilians and the cemetery has been set up especially for them.

IJGD 4216 Bippen (NS) 07/08 – 29/08 ENVI 12VBippen is a small village in the north of Osnabrück. You will complete a variety of forest and environmental protection projects. The main job for the group is to build shelters. In an environmentally protected area you will clear brush and trees in a moor so that the typical plants and animal world can live there. You will also build tree stands (for hunters) and clear hiking paths. On the grounds of the Kuhlhoff Centre (your accommodation) there is a barbecue area, sports facilities can be found in the surroundings (water sports). The Kuhlhoff Centre staff will support you in the planning of leisure time activities. Bikes will be provided for trips to the surroundings. IJGD 4116 Bohsdorf (BR) 07/08 – 29/08 RENO 12VThe “Sozialpädagogisches Institut” Foundation is responsible for a leisure centre named “Bergschlößchen”, situated in Spremberg (www.spremberg.de/ffz) and a youth meeting centre in Bohsdorf. This centre is situated on the banks of lake Felix (“Felixsee”), amidst a well wooded, beautiful landscape. Here is where kids and young people find ideal conditions to spend their leisure time and holidays doings sport and games in natural surroundings. You will help to restore a roof and renew the lights in different bungalows. Moreover, you will do painting tasks on the grounds of the centre. You will also learn about and participate in the regionally-known city festival in Spremberg and prepare and complete the folks cultural party. You will be in contact with youth and may lead some of their free-time activities if you are interested. Leisure time activities include swimming in the Felixsee, bike riding, inline skating, bowling, beach volleyball, streetball and table tennis. This vacation camp was given as a charitable contribution to an organization and needs to be renovated. In order to improve the attractiveness and stand of the forest camp for the children and youth who will spend future summers here, your duties are important. You will dig trenches for electrical wires, paint the cabins, and many other small projects. There are many free-time activities in the area, including swimming, visits to a summer toboggan run in Malchow and many others.

A local organization would like to restore the garden to its original condition. You will participate in a variety of activities as part of this workcamp, including clearing the historical paths and reconstructing the Kaiser’s steps. The Schweriner Lake is a well-known and loved excursion and vacation area. Bicycles will be provided for you to explore the area.

In addition, the group will help to create an aroma- and taste-garden and to build a bower. You will have many free-time options, including swimming, concerts, activities with the youth center, museum trips, sports, disco, and if you like, can go tandem hang-gliding.

For the people of Berlin, this district serves as a recreational area. Situated in this area is a home for the mentally handicapped the outside facilities of which will be redesigned because a new building has been built. In cooperation with the residents and under professional guidance of a work therapist you will design and complete a new garden concept. You will also perform tasks inside the home. You will work with the residents to make handicrafts. The highlight of the project will be a summer party on one of the camp Saturdays. IJGD 4415 Arendsee (ST) 15/08 – 04/09 CONS/KIDS 15V This workcamp takes place in cooperation with the Arendsee childrens’ and young peoples’ recreational centre “KIEZ”. On the large property of the KIEZ is a pine playground for sports, vacation bungalows, free-time activities, and homes. You will build a terrace from stone and place herbs in the sunny areas. After the summer season there will be many other renovation and painting projects in the rooms and on the objects of the KIEZ. Moreover, you can offer intercultural workshops for the children and thereby support the local staff. Your ideas for games, dances, songs etc. from your countries and your creativity and initiative are highly welcome! In your own leisure time, you can use the KIEZ facilities and go to Arendsee where you have bathing and other water sports facilities and a beautiful landscape perfect for bike trips and hikes.

IJGD 4401 Plothen (TH) 20/08 – 11/09 RENO 15V You will work with the youth hostel Thueringen and the youth hostel Plothen to do projects on the Castle Neidenburg. Plothen lies in the Saale-Orla-Kresi region amid vast spruce forests and agricultural land and on ponds and wetlands. The ponds offer constantly changing variety of species and are great for nature lovers. The youth hostels focus on ecological education. Under professional guidance you will work at the hostel and at the Castle Neidenburg youth hostel which lies a few kilometres away. A former dining hall will be torn down and new common rooms will be built. You will renovate a cellar to make a free-time activity room and paint bungalows. You will also care for and work on the playground area. In your leisure time, you can do sports (there are sports fields and table tennis facilities nearby), have barbecues, rent rowboats or go hiking. There is also a nature education programme that you can take part in.

This year you will take part in the various building activities around the house, cooperating closely with local youth and parents. The group will build a wall mosaic and paint.

IJGD 4309 Bruckberg (BY) 21/08 – 11/09 ENVI 14V The middle Franconian town of Bruckberg lies in the beautiful forested area between Ansbach and Nuerenberg. In the Bruckberger home live about 500 mentally and other handicapped youth and adults. You will work with the townspeople to create a “Sense pathway” as part of a new procedure for the hall. You will build the pathway for movement, sight and feel, orientation, hearing, smell, and taste, in a small area just west of the Bruckberg Station. Surely building this will develop not only the visitor’s senses, but also your own. At the beginning of the camp an outing to Nuerenberg to see “Experience field for the senses” has been organized. You will have the opportunity to visit the castle in Bruckberg during your free-time, as well as to take trips to Rothenburg ob der Tauberg, Dinkelsbuehl, and the Franconian lake lands.

Following the bank of the river they are planning to build small lakes connected by a small wood bridge. Under the direction of a carpenter you will have the opportunity to participate in the excitement of building a health spa. Grafenwiesen lies in the middle of the Bavarian forest and offers many opportunities for hiking and enjoying the local mountains and forest. You will have bicycles to use and free entrance to the Grafenwiesen swimming pool. You will also have the opportunity to travel to Regensburg or take a canoe trip.

The project includes the design of the outer grounds of the centres, mosaic work, painting and maintenance work in a garden. The project asks for your creative and physical commitment; it will be diversified and offer the opportunity to bring in your own ideas. Tickets for public transport will be provided so that there is always the opportunity to take trips to downtown Stuttgart with its museums, palaces, parks, swimming pools etc. You may also take a hike in the vineyards bordering the river Neckar.

This includes cleaning the fringes of the graves and removing old fringes as well as cleaning the grave stones. You will put in new grave fringes and sow lawn around them. The war victims buried here are German and non-German soldiers and civilians for whom the “Kriegsgräberfriedhof” (war time graveyard) has been erected. You will have the possibility to work on three different projects. You can build wooden play figures (farmhouse, big domino game) or do landscape conservation work on the grounds of the youth leisure centre. Moreover, you can help with the childrens’ and youth activities and take part in events organized by the association. You will take care of visitors, organise leisure and sports activities, play and do handicrafts with school classes and organize festivals in the villages around Prenzlau.

Make your own television! You will be able to try this at the international Media camp. The theme is culture and a cultural life. You will observe and lead theater groups, music bands, and/or folk dance or folklore groups with a camera on your shoulder. You will use your creativity to turn the material gathered into a feature film, a report, a video clip or an experimental film. At the end of the camp your work will be presented to the public in a live programme designed by the workcamp group. The technical equipment and the rooms will be provided by a local TV-station. This camp aims at all those who are interested in media work with video and tv techniques. Previous experience in this field is welcome, but not necessary.
