NIG 02 Peenemünde 28/6 16/7 RENO/ CONS 10 Location: Peenemünde is located in the northern part of the island Usedom. On the island volunteers will find an impressive landscape with steep coastlines, forests, swamps, and marshland and last but not least charming fishing spots. From 1936 until 1989 the region was restricted (for army use only), therefore the nature in the surroundings has developed undisturbed. Looking back in history Peenemünde participated in the development of the V-Rockets and today there is a memorial as well as a technical historical information centre reminding of it. Short trips with sailing boats to other islands in the Baltic Sea are planned. Work: RENO/ CONS
The volunteers will work on an island named Usedom located in the Baltic Sea. You will be working on the area of the historical and technical museum there (“ Historische und technisches Museum”) and your job will be the construction of an area outside especially designed for young people.

NIG 03 Rostock I 28/6 16/7 CULT/ YOUTH/ TRANS 10 Location: Rostock with its population of 200.000 inhabitants is one of the largest cities of northern Germany. It´s also a city of great importance where the volunteers will among other things encounter several buildings of historical and cultural value. Due to its proximity to the Baltic Sea and to the Warnow river Rostock is usually crowded with tourists. Opportunities for leisure activities are among other things to go swimming in the sea, go canoeing and trips to a big german metropolis like Berlin and Hamburg. Rostock is shaped throught the university and the students create a vivid and modern atmosphere.Work: The volunteers from different nationalities will assist those interested (for example high school or university students) to improve their language skills in languages such as English, Spanish, French, and others. On top of that the volunteers will naturally have the opportunity to spend their leisure time with those students.

NIG 04 Lambrechtshagen 19/7 1/8 RENO 10 Location: Lambrechtshagen is only 6 kilometres from Rostock. Rostock with its population of 200.000 inhabitants is one of the largest cities of northern Germany. It´s also a city of great importance where the volunteers will among other things encounter several buildings of historical and cultural value. Due to its proximity to the Baltic Sea and to the Warnow river Rostock is usually crowded with tourists. Opportunities for leisure activities are among other things to go swimming in the sea, go canoeing and trips to a big german metropolis like Berlin and Hamburg. Rostock is shaped throught the university and the students create a vivid and modern atmosphere.Work: The NGO (Non Governmental Organization) „Jugendwohnen Rostock e.V.“ has deactivated the former day-care centre for children and uses the building since 1996 as a housing centre to take care of youngsters with social problems. The main duty will be to do some renovation works together with these youngsters.

NIG 05 Röbel I 19/7 7/8 HIST/ RENO 10 Location: The town Röbel was already in the 13. century an important place between the towns Schwerin and Havelberg. The town Röbel is near the Müritz which is Germany’s biggest lake. It is possible to sail, to swim, and to make bike tours in the wonderful countryside. Excursions to cities like Rostock or Berlin can be organised. There are a lot of possibilities to take walks along the beautiful lake Müritz and to have a look at the pictureous city. In Röbel you can find the Müritz-Therme, an indoor-swimming-pool opened all year through.Work: The participants will continue the tasks of last year’s camp by working on the area of an external camp of a former concentration camp and a camp for prisoners of war in Malchow/ Retzow. The inmates there had to work under extreme conditions. You will help with the securing, measuring and documenting of the area.

Nowadays this ship called MS-Stubnitz is also known as Culture-ship or Youth-ship. The ship is inhabitable since 1999. However numerous activites take place on the ship like cultural events, concerts, exhibitions, etc. The volunteers will paint the 74 metres long and 12 metres wide and participate in several other activities.

NIG 07 Ravensbrück 19/7 7/8 HIST/ TRANS 10 Location: Ravensbrück has approximately 10.000 inhabitants and is located in northern Germany, close to Fürstenberg (about 70 kilometres north of Berlin). The landscape is dominated by countless small and big lakes that create a wonderful scenery. Fürstenberg is also known through its sad role in World War II. In Ravensbrück (in 1938/39) the largest concentration camp for women was built during the Nazi regime. Work: The main goal of this camp is to work with the history of the concentration camp Ravensbrück. Therefore the volunteers will be researching in the library, in the multimedia files as well as in the local archives. Throught this the volunteers will be given the opportunity to learn a lot of interesting things about the history of Ravensbrück. Besides that the participants will have the opportunity to explore the area on organized tours and by themselves. Good knowledge of the German language is necessary! NIG 08 Graal-Müritz 19/7 7/8 RENO/ YOUTH 10 Location: Graal-Müritz is known for its special climate and to be a sea health resort where people travel to for recreation and rehabilitation. Throughout the whole year tourists come due to its extraordinarily beautiful landscape. In the surroundings the volunteers will discover cities like Rostock and Ribnitz-Damgarten, both of which can be reached easily by public transportation.Work: The volunteers will be involved in the renewal of the Youth Club. In order to achieve this goal the participants are encouraged to use all of their creativity. The work involves some repair and manual work as well as the organization of a party on the beach.

NIG 10 Demmin I 26/7 14/8 RENO/ RECON 10 Location: Demmin has appoximately 15.000 inhabitants and is located in the centre of the state Mecklenburg-Vorpommern about 30 km from Greiswald and about 70 km from Rostock. In Demmin three rivers cross and form a charming landscape. Demmin is characterized by the nature reserve and the nature park „Mecklenburgische Schweiz und Kummerower See“.
Work: The participants will help constructing small wooden houses close to the harbour of Demmin. The volunteers will work under supervision of a carpender. On top of that the volunteers will design the surroundings and gardens of the houses.

Accommodation: The participants will be accommodated in the Luisentor (gate of the city), which used to be a prison and was built in the 13th century.

NIG 11 Schmarsow 9/8 27/8 ENVI/ RECON 10 Location: Schmarsow is a friendly village close to Demmin. This little town is located in the state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and reached its peak in the period of the Hanseatic league. For this reason several old buildings which date back to the Middle Ages can be found in Schmarsow. Three rivers flow through Demmin creating a fascinating and beautiful landscape. For leisure time activities several excursions are planned, there is the chance to go swimming, canoeing, and on bike-tours. 
Work: This workcamp is for nature lovers as the work will be mainly outdoors. Around the vicar´s house there is a lot of work to be done with the flora; that means you will have your “hands on the dirt” in order to cultivate plant species. NIG 15 Lubmin 16/8 4/9 ENVI/ RENO 10 Location: Lubmin is a small and very friendly village with just about 500 inhabitants. It is situated at the coast of the Baltic Sea and near the Hanseatic city of Greifswald. Nearby is the nature reserve called “Greifswalder Bodden” where several small islands can be found. Swimming, sailing, and excursions to other cities such as Rostock and Stralsund are possible. Rügen (Germany´s largest island) is also close by.Work: In Lubmin the volunteers will be working at a school (Heimvolkshochschule) and on its surroundings grounds. The actual work consists of the maintenance of the outdoor area and of some renovations. An environmental project will take place near the school. The participants will also have the opportunity to discuss and decide about day-trips and excursions.

There you will be occupied with designing several biotopes and with the growth and care of several rare plants. Typical for the region are salt and orchid meadows.

VJF  VJF 1.1, Kirch Kogel near Guestrow, 16/08 – 29/08/04, ENVI, 10 VolThe volunteers’ work will consist of cultivation of a biotope, planting work, clearance of a forest, removing meadows and bushes in the area surrounding Karow. This is a special camp for nature lovers.

VJF 1.2, Dreilützow, 16/08 – 29/08/04, ENVI/ART, 15 Vol         You will work around the castle Dreiluetzow, putting up signs on footpaths for the children and youth groups visiting the castle. You will also have the chance to improve the appearance of the paths with decorative wood. Another task in this workcamp will be care for the park behind the castle. The highlight of the workcamp will be the light feast on the last weekend. Here we need your help for preparation and during the feast. We would really appreciate, if you play an instrument, if you could it bring with you.Accommodation: in a little building next to the castle

VJF 1.3, Anklam, 16/08-05/09/04, RENO, 15 VolVolunteers will be working at the water sports’ club in Anklam. They will have to renew the front of the main house and will do renovation work at the bungalows as well as gardening work (for example to remove weed, to cut bushes and to dig tunnels) in the area. Perhaps volunteers will work also on boats or machines that is repairing, rust removal and painting.

VJF 1.4, Bröllin, 19/07-08/08/04, CONS, 8 VolIn this year the workcamp will create a children’s leisure centre in the park and the surroundings of the former court. If the weather is rainy you will work inside of the buildings, renovating the rooms.

VJF 2.2, Hölzerner See, 20/09-03/10/04, RENO/ENVI, 15 VolThe volunteers will renovate various rooms. They will paint playthings and will build new playthings in the forest. Furthermore garden work is planned, e.g. planting of a hedge for the protection of birds.

The main aim of this workcamp is to bring young people from different countries together, to study and deepen the understanding of history and gain the access to the period of National Socialism. The participants will give their assistance to the „Memorial and Museum Sachsenhausen“, the former concentration camp. But there are also physical works to be done i.e. gardening, maintenance, and cleaning up of specific areas of the memorial.

VJF 2.5, Burg, 12/08-03/09/04, AGRI/ENVI, 12 VolThis is a workcamp in a famous Germany area called „Spreewald“. The volunteers will work about 6 hours per day in a special agricultural area of a biosphere reserve. Do gardening work i.e. working and harvesting in the herb garden.
Accommodation: In youth hostel near Burg.
Terminal: Airport or train station in Berlin, train up to Cottbus, then take a bus from Marienstraße towards Burg or Straupitz/Lübben.    
VJF 2.6, Potsdam, 19/07-04/08/04, RENO/HIST, 15 VolYou will do different clearing and gardening work at the Jewish cemetery and in the historic Russian Colony Alexandrowka. Experts of the department, responsible for the maintenance of memorials in Potsdam will supervise your work. So you will have the possibility to get a deeper knowledge about the history of Potsdam during the last centuries and if you are also interested, especially about the time during and after the Second Word War. Of course we will visit some of the places, which Potsdam is famous for. You will also have to do maintenance and care for the historical monuments in the cemetery.
Accommodation: You will live in a student dormitory in 3-bed-rooms. A kitchen and a common room will be available.

VJF 2.7, Ravensbrück, 02/08-18/08/04, HIST/STUDY, 15 VolVolunteers are going to work near the area of the former concentration camp Ravensbrück, which was the largest concentration camp for women during the time of fascism. Today at this place there is a memorial museum. It is planned that the group will work in a small unknown special camp near the main area of the women-concentration camp. There are different works: clean the area of the wild growing vegetation, archaeological work, and investigation-works.There will be many possibilities to learn a lot about the history and background of fascism by visiting other museums and talking to a time witness. A special topic will be the information and discussion about SIEMENS (one of the big war factories). It’s also possible to discuss recent problems of racism and neo-fascism.

VJF 2.8, Wulkow, 12/07-01/08/04, ENVI, 15 VolIn our eco-village there are a lot of people who are interested in ECOLOGICAL WORK. So you have to work in this field, for example: taking care of circular beds, elder plantings, the castle park, herb garden, village pond, barefoot path, natural purification system work in the kindergarten and plan and build an outside theatre. Eventually you will work with clay and learn how to use ecological building materials.

You will prepare an event in which volunteers will plant trees. You will put in supports of wood and paint them in different colours. You will also help to prepare an exhibition in the old castle.
The next week you will spend working in Petkus. You will build a parking place and fences. Another task will be renovation work in the old manor house.

VJF 3.4, Berlin - Krimiweg, 21/07-01/08/04, RENO/STUDY, 15 VolThe volunteers will help to make the project and meeting centre of VJF (Union of Youth Volunteers) more attractive for our visitors. This will include, repairing, renovating, cleaning, garden work and repairing old and second hand bicycles which could be used by our young guests in future.

VJF 3.5, Video Camp, 06/08-22/08/04, ART, 12 VolsVJF will celebrate its 15th birthday in 2005. You will help to create a video about the projects organized by VJF. Your task is to work with camera, light and sound. We split the camp in groups. Each team has to visit different workcamps and project places of the Voluntary Ecological Year. They also have to interview the staff members of VJF, volunteers and project leader for the film, and than to cut their material. Finally we put the several takes together.

VJF 3.6, Berlin Marzahn, 30/08-19/09/04, AGRI/CULT, 15 VolIn this workcamp, there will be more to do with environment and farming. You will work in a special farm called „Tierhof Alt Marzahn“, which is an agricultural museum located in a big town and still working by using traditional methods of farm work (19th century). There is cattle breeding in this „Tierhof“ especially for domestic animals in danger of extinguishing and the volunteers are therefore asked to help in the daily work at the farm, i.e. preparing food for animals (rabbits, chicken, sheep, horses, donkeys), clean the cages, and build fences. The second part of the workcamp will be to prepare the annual traditional market (two-day-market) in Marzahn, where farmers offer their goods and artists show performance, which will include construction of the market stalls and decoration. You might probably be needed for clearing work after the closing of the market.

You will renovate the rooms of the kindergarten. Another task will be work in the garden. There you will plant a hedge for little animals and birds. For sure you will get in contact with the children who are attending the kindergarten at this time.

VJF 4.1, Sachsen-Anhalt, 22/08-13/09/04, ART, 11 VolThe project is called TABS – Toleranzförderung in Alltag, Beruf und Schule durch interkulturelles Lernen (Improving of Tolerance in everyday life, at work and in school via intercultural learning). You will live and work in Magdeburg, the capital of the federal state Sachsen-Anhalt. Together with youngsters from Magdeburg you will participate in art workshops. The outcome will be an exhibition, which includes arts, painting, graphics, sculpturing, performance etc.Accommodation: in an old lord house

REMARKS: Volunteers have to be very motivated and very interested to take part in such kind of camp. Also they should have skills in the topics fine arts and/or descriptive arts. Volunteers have to be sure, that they can join this project the whole time. Please notice: it’s going to be hard work. VJF acts only as coordinating organisation. VJF 5.1, Gut Gamig, 09/07-01/08/04, AGRI/MENT, 10 VolGamig Castle is an estate consisting of a farm, chapel and a small garden. Some of the Castle’s buildings date back as far as the 16th Century. Nowadays it is used for the rehabilitation and treatment of mentally ill (manic depressive and schizophrenic) people. The patients work on a large organic farm, as well as in art and craft shops. Volunteers are asked to do different gardening work and to help in the agricultural activities such as apple harvesting and cleaning vegetables. Sometimes volunteers will work alongside the patients. It is planned to have talks about methods and aims of the medical treatment of the centre with the doctor. Visits of the different workshops, where patients spend their working day are possible.

VJF 6.1, Weisbach, 05/07-25/07/04, ARCH, 8 VolThe volunteers will be asked to help with the excavation work in the fortress with the possibility of doing drawings or helping with the presentation of an exhibition. The village is quite isolated, difficult to reach by public means of transport.

VJF 6.2, Weissensee-Runneburg, 06/08-29/08/04, ARCH/RENO/CULT, 14 VolHere you will find one of the biggest Romanic castles of Germany, which was built in the 12th century. The volunteers will be involved in restoration and maintenance. Do some excavation work, but mainly renovation and clearing work in the surrounding area and inside the tower. Additionally you will help to prepare the castle-festival.
Accommodation: In a big room inside the castle or in tents.
Terminal: Airport Berlin or Halle/Leipzig, train to Erfurt, then train to Sömmerda.    
VJF 6.3, Jena, 16/08-29/08/04, ENVI, 12 Vol This is a city with good surroundings and with good possibilities for recreation and relaxation. The volunteers will help the environmentally engaged „Berggesellschaften“ and the local foresters with the renovation and construction of several recreation facilities in the Jena-forest. Probably help painting small wooden huts, repair trails, cut small trees and renovate signs on the educational way through the forest.
Accommodation: In a hostel in the western part of Jena.
Terminal: Airport or train in Berlin, train to Jena-Paradies. From there, you will have to walk for about 40 minutes. Following the signboards, „International Workcamp“, but in case of any problems, don’t hesitate asking the people you meet on the way.
    
VJF 6.4, Buchenwald, 19/07-01/08/04, HIST, 20 VolThe volunteers will work in the memorial of the former concentration camp of Buchenwald. They will do several works in the memorial area like cleaning, gardening and restoration in co-operation with the curators of the memorial. Your work will also have to do with the original remains of this former concentration camp. You will get to know more about the time of fascism. Moreover you will see documentary movies and those who would like, may work with materials of the library or the archive.
Accommodation: In the youth centre building situated on the area of the concentration camp.
Terminal: Airport or train station in Berlin, train to Erfurt and then one to Weimar, then bus nr. 6 up to Buchenwald.
    
VJF 6.5, Mühlhausen, 04/07-25/07/04, RENO, 12 VolBesides the buildings for accommodation and the church, which are redeveloped by professional handcrafters, one of the buildings – maybe the nicest one – is planned to offer rooms for meetings and for creative activities. The building has good walls and a new roof, but the interior is desolate. The work camp participants will help to do redeveloping and repair work of floors, walls, ceilings, doors and windows. Timberwork, painting and clay plastering is waiting to be done.
Accommodation:Several rather modest mattress-on-the-floor accommodations are possible in the actually unused buildings of the site or in the backpacker’s accommodation.
