SERRES

Serres is an authentic city that preserves its identity and culture. It is in the ventre of Macedonia and it combines pictureness with urban life. It truly offers to its visitors a great variety of attractions.

The railway station is picturesquely preserved to remind the older people of earlier times. The central square "Eleftherias", with its fountain, the green, the sidewalks and the many cafes all around, is a meeting place for the inhabitants of Serres. The pride of the city are: the Acropolis (its highest point), the valley of Agion Anargiron, the Agios Ioannis, the swimming pool, the sports facilities and many other places. The history of the city is many centuries old. It becomes known in history for the first time at the beginning of the 5th century BC and it is mentioned by Herodotus.

The cultural life of the city is enriched by the District Public Theater, which offers classical and modern performances with the participation of well-known actors, thus satisfying the theater loving audience in the city of Serres.

The nightlife of the city of Serres is quite rich. The young can entertain themselves in many nightclubs, discos, etc.

The shopping area of the city is famous for its finely decorated and full shops. Many foreign tourists from the neighboring countries of Eastern Europe often visit Serres to do their shopping. Among the special things that one can buy in Serres is the famous all over Greece "akanes", a traditional kind of Turkish delight, which is made only in Serres since 1927.

The Education Establishments - TEI and the Athletic Academy, that opened in the city of Serres several years ago, have offered the city of Serres all the advantages of their presence here.

THE FORTRESS OF RUPEL

The fortress of Rupel constitutes a heroic monument of Modern Greek history and was the biggest among 21 groups of fortresses built during the 2^nd World War. It disposes of underground labyrinths 17m under the earth and it is situated 322m above sea level in the Greek-Bulgarian borders, having the last Greek village Promachonas at its ?foot?. With its strategic position, it played an important role to the interception of German troops. The day of its surrender, April 10^th 1941, was accompanied by important casualties of the conquerors. Nowadays, it is considered to be unique in Europe and still constitutes a frontier outpost, the legendary past of which turned it into a tourist sightseeing. The sightseeing-tour in the fortress takes place by an Army Officer.

STRYMONAS RIVER


It is one of the most important habitats of Central Macedonia, almost intact by human being,, which shelters a great number of water and wading birds. Moreover, a lot of migratory birds, such as the Pygmy Cormorant and Dalmatian Pelican, rare and endangered species use it as a station during their migration. Strymonas Delta is protected by the programme Natura 2000.

TRACK OF SERRES

The track of Serres is the biggest in Balkans. Since 1998 it is visited by drivers from Greece in order to test their abilities. Many Greek and International car and motorcycle races take place there. Cars and motorcycles are hosted there around the track. The south part includes go karting.

THE CAVE OF ALISTRATI




The cave of Alistrati is one of the most beautiful extened caves of Greece and probably of the whole Europe! It lies 6km southeasterly from Alistrati, at the position ?? Petroton ?? . The Hellenic speleological Organization identifed the existence of the cave , in 1975. Nowadays, it desposes 25.000m2 of known surface and it is almost plain.The cave was formed by geological phenomena, which began their activity 2.000.000 years ago. It operates with an excellent natural airing of all its parts and ideal safety conditions, while the total length of known passages reaches about 3km. Inside the cave, the path starts from the majestic entrance to the main chamber. Arriving in at the main chamber, imposing stalactites suspending from the celing, wonderful stalagmites from the floor and columns formed by their join compose an exquisite imposing scene for the visitors.
