A capital village spread oit among three
hills full of pine trees. It is 3km NW of Krestena and has 2158 residents.
SIGHTS
PREHISTORICAL SKYLLOUS has
the hill of the Prophet Ilias in the centre and is 500m west of the village.
Many shells and graves from Greek to Roman times were found there. One
hundred metres SE of the church a tomb dating from 1580-1100
BC was found in 1968. The numerous findings are now on
display in the museum in Ancient Olympia and the Archaeological Museum of
Athens.
THE PROPHET ILIAS
monasteri is on a hill full of pine trees and has an
excellent view. It is celebrated on July 20.
THE LOCATION OF THE TWO POST MYCENEAN
TOMBS in the area of
«Kania» or «Kivouria»
. They are 14m apart and carred on soft stone. They are
7m in diameter, 5m high and very rich in findings.
A PLACE OF OFFERINGS TO THE GODS of
the 5th
and 4th century
BC, with the dimensions of 9,5m×9,5m
and depth of 0,75m in the area of «Kaboulis»,
with many important findings. Remainders of two ancient settlements that
have not been identified were found near this location.
THE HISTORICAL SKILLOUS on the
plains of the «Babes»
area is 4,5 km east of the village.
Numerous foundations of huge buildings may be seen here which give evidence
of the existence of a flourishing populous city and where many valuable
findings were discovered in exavations (1953,1954,1955,1956,1963,1968)
. A small (8,40×9,55m)
Doric temple with the inscription "Tou Dios"(of Zeus)
was found on the hill of «Arnokataraho».
On a smaller hill «Ai Lias»
the ruins of another tempoe were found.
ST. JOHN'S
, the famous basilic chapel of "Xenitias" was built in
1899, on the beautiful hill with pine trees 700m NW of the village. It was
established us the church for the immigrants with the initiative of the
artist Giannopoulos from Makrisia. Every year
there are cultural activities taking place in the «celebration
of the immigrants», with the presence of
people of literature and art.
ALPHEIOS DAM is 5km NW of the
village. The bridge for
Olympia -Krestena crosses over.
MOUNT TYPAION
which is discribed by Pausanias and identifies to the
same area of «Arnokataraho».
According to tradition, the women watched the Olympic games from here. And
if one were to break the rules and cross the river of Alpheios.
ZALI PETRA
at the foot of Mount Typaion, is near the fountain of «Sliava»
there is a tall stone which looks like the figure of a
woman. According to Myths it is a woman who was petrified while watching the
Olympic Games which were 700m away, across the river of Alpheios.
ST. NICOLAOS
,the basilic parish church
(built in 1890)
with the marble icon screen( 1928),
icons dating from 1902 and
1908, a Bible published in Vienna in 1799.
WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW
LOCAL CELEBRATIONS:
«The
celebration of the immigrants», in St. John
, «the chapel of the immigrants».
Many artists of international importance have honoured
this event with their presence. The one who inspired this cultural event is
the well-known artist from Makrisia, John
Joanopoulos.
The fair in honour of the Prophet Elias on
19 and 20 July with folk groups and roast pork.
