About Model United Nations

With the invaluable contribution of  English Language Professor Mrs. Zoe Pigka a group of teachers and students decided to participate in a MUN conference held in Thessalonica which organized by the Aristoteleio College (more informations at  http://aristoteliomun.blogspot.gr/p/about-mun.html ).  Model UN conferences are mostly organized and run by private colleges because of the high cost of organizing and running conferences of this type.

MUN is a model version of the real UN. It is a conference similar to the United Nations one in which students participate as delegates in various UN Committees and it is always held in the English language. We decided to participate, because the conference is an activity where students from all over the world attend international conferences and discuss issues of global importance, trying to bring solutions to them. Students represent different nations, and defend their points of view in the discussions that take place. Participants research and formulate political positions based on the actual policies of the countries they represent. Model UN involves researching, public speaking, debating, and writing, often along with critical thinking, teamwork and leadership skills.

The educational benefits of Model UN for students and teachers are that not only involves them in the study and discussion of global issues, but also encourages the development of skills useful throughout their lives, such as research, writing, public speaking, problem solving, consensus building, conflict resolution and compromise and cooperation.

The type of the MUN in Aristoteleio college conference is the formal Debate. That means:

  • All parliamentary procedures are in place. This basically means this will be a structured debate where a speaker will ?take the floor?, make a speech, perhaps answer 1 or 2 questions, and return to their seat.
  • Speaker?s List in order: A list of delegates wishing to speak will be created at the beginning of debate, and during the debate, this list will be followed.
  • Delegates cannot talk among themselves.
  • Delegates may send notepapers to each other, if a ?messenger? or ?admin staff? available.
