п»їHistory of sports betting.
Sports betting has been around for as long as sports have existed. It takes one of man’s favorite pastimes (i.e. sports) and makes it even more interesting by adding a personal stake in the outcome (i.e. gambling).
Origins of Sports Betting.
The first record of sports betting dates back more than 2,000 years ago. The Greeks’ love of sports led them to introduce the Olympics to the world as well as the earliest records of betting on athletic competitions.
From the Greeks, sports betting spread to ancient Rome where it was eventually accepted even legalized. In particular, Romans bet on the gladiator games, and even when this ancient sporting event eventually came to a stop, gambling survived and continued to spread to other kingdoms.
During medieval times, some religious leaders tried to make laws forbidding it. This forced sports betting underground, where it continued to exist and even grow as new sporting events were introduced to the world.
Later in history, gambling became very popular in England in the form of horse race betting. The English spread the practice to the rest of the world, particularly the US, where it quickly became a favorite pastime for many people.
Overall, gambling has continued to grow worldwide and is very popular today, especially throughout Europe which has become the biggest sports betting market.
An expansion in the number of sports events that people can wager on has also helped improve the popularity of sports betting. Some of the sports you see today were not in existence more than a few centuries ago. Today, one can bet on a wide variety of sporting events from soccer to american football and everything in between.
Currently, sports betting is not just a fun activity, it is also a multi-billion dollar business generating huge profits for sportsbooks and casinos worldwide.
Recent Sports Betting History.
In the fifties, Las Vegas legalized sports betting in their land based casinos making it appear legitimate in the eyes of many. The problem was that you had to walk into a casino to place your wager. If you weren’t close to Las Vegas you were out of luck if you wanted to place a bet.
The Las Vegas sports books handle billions of dollars in business every year, but it’s only a small percentage of the total amount bet in the United States. Much more betting volume is handled illegally by local bookies and offshore bookmakers.
For years the majority of sports bets in the United States were placed with local bookies. Bookies operate illegally, but are ignored by law enforcement for the most part.
In just about any jurisdiction in the world you can find an online book maker to take your bet. Many countries have ruled these operations illegal, but that hasn’t stopped them from taking bets anyway. They are located in jurisdictions that make it hard, or even impossible, to prosecute them so they continue offering book service to people around the world.
The same things that make these online sports books hard to regulate can also make them risky to place bets with. You can find plenty of online sports books that have solid track records and offer a safe betting experience, but you can also find many that have taken advantage of sports bettors.
Online Sports Betting.
No other single factor has increased the growth of sports betting more than the advent of the internet. Before the internet, sports betting, though popular, was nowhere near as widespread as it is today. With the internet, people could place bets anytime from anywhere, on any device. As a result, sports betting has exploded ever since and continue to grow year after year.
No longer was there a need to visit a bookmaker to place your bets, or even attend the sporting events yourself in order to enjoy sports betting. From the comfort of your couch, you can now place bets as you watch the events live on your television.
With online betting, you can also see the betting lines change and this means you can find the best betting opportunities as the event unfolds, especially when betting on live sporting events.
Its now possible to bet on practically any event in the world. And why stop with sporting events? You can also bet on politics, entertainment shows, movie box office opening weekend numbers, eSports and much more. Visit NetBet for more betting options.
The Future of Sports Betting.
People have been betting on sports for as long as sports have been played. There’s no reason to believe this will change in the future.
The two most popular sports to place bets on today are both called football. The worldwide game of football, called soccer in some areas, offers thousands of games every year where fans can place bets. American football, including both the NFL and college, is also responsible for billions of dollars of betting action every year.
Other popular sports to bet on include basketball, baseball and hockey. However, you can place bets on just about any sport you can think of. I’ve seen bets placed on badminton, horse racing, car racing, Olympic sports, pool, darts, golf, swimming and ostrich races.
The internet and smartphones continues to fuel the growth of sports betting. You used to need to make bets face to face with a person at a betting window. Now you can still do that, call or text your local bookie, walk into a sports book or log into an online sports book to place bets. Online sports betting sites are now even offering in-progress (i.e. live betting) betting that allows gamblers to bet in real time from tip off to the final whistle.
Perhaps the best example of the unstoppable growth and future of sports betting is daily fantasy sports (DFS). Sites like FanDuel and DraftKings allow customers to bet their teams and collect same day. DFS is legal in most jurisdictions in the United States and many feel that when sports betting does finally become legal, it will lead the way in making sports betting main stream.
Recently there has been a lot of talk in the media about the legalization of sports betting. Many States are trying to pass laws making it legal for them to allow sports betting and collect much needed tax revenues. Proponents include NBA Commissioner, Adam Silver and MLB Commissioner, Rob Manfred. There is little doubt that legalized sports betting is a matter of ‘when’ and not ‘if’.

Who Is “The Conch”? A Look Into the World of Sports Betting.
Sports Betting is the latest craze to sweep across the nation and thousands upon thousands of fans have created a community that revolves around this. Legal sports betting in PA officially went live in November of 2018, just over two years ago. Since then, Philadelphia has become sort of an ‘epicenter’ for sports betting in the United States. One man has taken advantage of this, starting his brand “The Conch Mob” on social media.
He has become quite the interesting follow within the Sixers Twittersphere and I thought I would take some time to find out who exactly is “The Conch”.
First and foremost, can you give me some background about yourself?:
I recently graduated from Pitt about a year and a half ago as a computer engineer. Naturally, I put that to good use and started to apply that to sports in my free time.
How long have you been into sports, specifically the NBA?:
Sports? My whole life. Football was the main one growing up. I ended up getting into the NBA more heavily over the past 5-7 years.
Where did your interest in the Sixers come from?:
I’ve always been an Eagles fan, and an overall Philly fan. As my interest grew in the NBA, naturally the Sixers fandom followed.
Can you explain the Conch Mob to us and exactly what it is that you’ve been doing?:
So the Conch Mob is what I call myself along with everyone that engages with me on Twitter. The Mob is a group that promotes using data to find an edge in sports, and create a responsible and smart betting community. My goal is to change the way people view sports betting. Most see it as a heads or tails, one side of a spread or another, but I am confident that using data paired with external information that we always use, you can edge toward profitability.
Where did you get the idea for the “Conch Mob”?:
When I made my first script for the NBA years ago, I named it the magic conch. Mostly as a joke, because it “had all the answers.” I Tweeted here and there on my burner account, and ended up calling my account the same thing. Next thing you know, I started building a bigger following and never changed the name. My friend coined the phrase “Conch Mob” and I haven’t looked back. I’m now the Conch, and we’re all the Conch Mob.
How successful has this venture been thus far?:
I aim to end the year up units, just like any other consistent bettor. I view this as more of an investment than a gamble, and work toward “beating the markets” per say. My bare minimum yearly goal is to grow my account by 10% and continually compound it. I have far surpassed that goal already. Let’s just say I’ll be filing some extra taxes next year!
How did you get into sports betting?:
Years ago I started learning about it and was always interested. Naturally, like anyone else, I lost a few bucks and didn’t like it…so I did something to change that.
What’s one piece of advice you’d give to anyone who is just getting their feet wet into the world of sports betting?:
Don’t just parlay a bunch of stuff or blindly put your whole account into a bet. Break your account into units (1-2.5% of the balance you commit to using for wagering) and bet based on confidence. Find your strategy, stick to it, and remember at the end of the day it is STILL quite literally a complete gamble.
You can follow Justin, aka “The Conch” on Twitter @ConchPicks ! Also be sure to check out his Patreon to access his scripts and for more ways to support the work he’s doing.

Technology Advancements in the World of Sports Betting.
It is the latest technology that has been adopted by the sports betting industry. The technology has attracted many people who like placing bets on virtual games.
Sports betting has transformed over the years due to technological advancements. In just a few years, betting has changed from placing bets on primary dial-up connections to live bets. Multiple betting sites have come up, making it the new usual way of betting.
Below, we take a look at how betting has transformed so far;
Internet-Based Betting.
The beginning of internet-based betting changed the industry. Internet enabled gamblers to place bets without being physically present at casinos, and from wherever they were. The same internet did away with time constraints on betting. Gamblers can now place their wager at any time, and it laid a platform for other technological advancements in sports betting.
Mobile Betting.
The industry has been taken by storm due to the ability to place a bet using your mobile phone. Using your mobile phone, one can deposit money into their betting account and withdraw cash, among other multiple activities. Due to the extensive usage of mobile phones, Betway and other betting sites have invested more in robust mobile applications.
Away from mobile apps, their sites have got optimized for phone use. It has enabled gamblers to have a good experience while placing bets using their phones. Bettors can access more customized and live betting. One does not have to wait till they get to their laptop or PC to place a bet.
Virtual Reality.
It is the latest technology that has been adopted by the sports betting industry. The technology has attracted many people who like placing bets on virtual games. Courtesy of the technology, one can watch multiple fantasy games via VR headsets. Among the games one can watch are golf, baseball, hockey, and football.
Bookmakers have more freedom due to the technology since they can organize virtual tournaments and revise their regulations. As for gamblers with greater expectations, the games have extraordinary graphics.
Be assured that the experience is immersive different from traditional sports events, which require one to have some experience in betting. Virtual betting is suitable for amateurs since they do away with past statistics of games and players.
Secure Payments.
Betting sites handle the user’s very personal information. Data being the new gold, sites need to assure the users that their financial data and bio-data are safe. Therefore, betting sites like Betway have integrated the latest technologies, such as tokenization and encryption, to secure data and payments. The technologies ensure gamblers’ data does not get into the hands of harmful third parties.
Without the decryption key, one is not able to read encrypted codes. On the other hand, tokenization swaps sensitive data with tokens and stores the original data safely.
Innovations in the industry are incredible, and people being able to witness lines evolve while watching a broadcast at the comfort of their homes is one thing gamblers in the 1990s could not experience. The industry’s ability to keep up with the changing trends has made the sector a multi-billion sector.
The innovations benefit both the gamblers and bookmakers. The financial transaction has become convenient. The future of the industry is bright.
