Michigan set to roll out online sports betting in mid-January.
Fifteen sportsbooks have already been approved for launch so far, including Fanduel and DraftKings, which are already offering pre-registration deals for bettors who sign up before actual betting can begin.
"I fully expect that sometime this month we’ll see a launch," State Senator Curtis Hertel told WILX 10 but clarified he is unsure on what exact date the launch will occur.
Fifteen sportsbooks have already been approved for launch so far, including Fanduel and DraftKings , which are already offering pre-registration deals for bettors who sign up before actual betting can begin, Fox News reports.
"I expect every casino in Detroit and most of the tribes will have a partner and will be online," Hertel said. "I think we’re talking about a dozen different offerings that will be available."
Mobile sports gambling can be done right from a bettor’s phone through sportsbook applications that follow location and age verification protocol as defined by the state’s Gaming and Control Board.
"For a Michigander that probably means you are going to have more access to legal sports betting with the launch of mobile sports betting," said John Holden , an assistant professor of business at Oklahoma State University who studies federal and state regulation of sports gambling.
Holden says casinos that introduce their own sportsbooks to the digital landscape could see more engagement as programs begin to launch.
"For the past few months, sports betting has been available in some casinos though, of course, access to those casinos has been limited over the past few months due to the COVID-19 pandemic," Holden explained.
State-governed casinos are being hit hard by COVID-19 closures and reduced capacity measures. Table game and slots revenue dropped by over sixty-one percent compared to November 2019.
"I think there’s some pent-up demand," said Richard Kalm , executive director of the Michigan Gaming and Control Board. "The casinos were only open at fifteen percent capacity in October, and November was only half a month because, remember, we had to close because of COVID."
Michigan is the twentieth state to legalize online sports betting. Other states have seen online sports take over the gambling scene in 2020.
"What we have seen is that states that have both brick and mortar sports betting and mobile betting are seeing upwards of 80 percent, 85 percent, New Jersey at one point was at 93 percent of the revenue was coming from mobile betting," Holden said.
According to Kalm, the process is now in the hands of casinos and sportsbook applications to make sure they’re able to launch. To be cleared, these entities must be compliant with safe gambling guidelines laid out by the state.
"At this point, we’re waiting for the independent test labs that test the software and the types of games and also the geolocation to make sure that they have geolocation properly in place, their internal controls, and their age verification in place," Kalm said.
FireKeepers Casino in Battle Creek was the first tribal casino in Michigan to implement sports betting back in June. They are expected to embrace digital sports gambling but haven’t released a launch timeline.
Soaring Eagle Casino near Mount Pleasant announced in November that they would be adding in-person sports betting, but have yet to comment on the possibility of going digital.
Online poker, slots and more casino classics also on their way to Michigan, Kalm said, possibly as soon as February.

These Were the 3 Best Sports Betting Stocks of 2020.
Betting online may be the future of sports gambling.
Sports betting is big business around the world, and it's been dominated for decades by traditional land-based casinos. That's changing as betting moves online, and the mobile gambling market took a major step forward in 2020 as more states legalized online gambling, and thousands of people began betting legally at home during the pandemic. A few companies hit public markets as well, bringing even more attention and funding to the industry.
As we look back on the year and forward to 2021, the sports betting market has three clear winners in my eyes: DraftKings (NASDAQ:DKNG) , MGM Resorts International (NYSE:MGM) , and the little known GAN Limited (NASDAQ:GAN) .

DraftKings.
The hottest sports betting stock of 2020 was DraftKings, hands down. The company hit the market through a special purpose acquisition company and hasn't looked back. Shares shot higher as the pandemic wore on and sports came back, helped by investors hoping that online betting would begin to replace in-person betting. For the year, shares are up 406%.
In some ways, the boom in online betting is happening faster than expected, and that's helped early movers like DraftKings. In New Jersey, which is the bellwether for online gambling because it was the biggest early state to allow betting, there were $91.8 million in bets in November 2020 alone, up 86.9% from a year ago. If that growth and level of revenue are any indication of the potential for the rest of the country, DraftKings has a long runway ahead.
The third-quarter 2020 results were a small indication of how well things are going for DraftKings. Revenue was up 42% on a pro forma basis to $133 million, and monthly unique users grew 64% to 1 million. Revenue is also expected to be $750 million to $850 million in 2021, up 45% at its midpoint from 2020 guidance. This is a sports betting stock with a lot going for it and maybe just at the beginning of its growth story.
MGM Resorts.
As gambling moves online, companies with a physical presence can sometimes have an advantage over digital-only companies. They have known brands, regulators sometimes require a physical presence to operate in a state, and there can be synergies between real-world and online casinos. That's the space that MGM Resorts is trying to fill, and it's done so relatively well in 2020.
The joint venture MGM Resorts built to enter the space is BetMGM, which is now offered in eight states and is growing as quickly as states will allow. Like DraftKings, the company is limited by what's legal in the U.S., but betting should be opening up in more states long term.
What I like about MGM as a sports betting play is that it has a foundation as a physical casino company. MGM can use the cash flow from its casinos to fund online gambling development, and if it does that successfully it should add a lucrative business to the portfolio.
GAN Limited.
DraftKings and MGM are the companies that are taking bets and building the apps that consumers are using, but GAN is building the background infrastructure that online gambling is built on. Its software services include player identity validation, payment services, regulatory reporting, and even some game content. And with the recently announced acquisition of Coolbet, it'll enter the sports betting market worldwide.
If sports betting continues to grow, GAN will be one of the beneficiaries because it's providing services to multiple players. And I would expect some casinos and game companies that don't have the capital to build their own infrastructure to lean on a company like GAN.
What's exciting about GAN is that it has the opportunity to grow with the online gambling and sports betting industries as well as grow the services it offers to clients. It already has a turnkey solution for infrastructure, but don't be surprised to see more games added to the portfolio so GAN can white-label the entire casino experience. That's where the real money will be made for this gambling stock.

Ohio Sports Betting Update: Where Things Stand Entering 2021.

Ohio, which seemed on the cusp of legal sports betting just a few months ago, won’t approve a wagering bill this year.
After five sports betting hearings, including several in recent weeks, an Ohio state Senate committee didn’t take up a legalization bill last week, effectively ending hopes it would pass this year. The full legislature concluded its 2021 session this week.
After a separate bill easily passed the state House of Representatives this summer, it appeared it would be a matter of when, not if, Ohio would approve legal wagering. Instead, the Senate and House could not finalize an agreement that merged their two proposals before the end of a chaotic 2020 legislative session, which saw several lawmakers contract COVID-19 and House Speaker Larry Householder arrested on federal racketeering charges.
Backers in the legislature will start up the 2021 session still hopeful they can pass the long-discussed sports betting legislation, but they must do so with many of the same challenges that sidelined the proposal in 2020 and without three of its leading supporters in office.
Ohio Sports Betting Background.
A large population, a growing casino gaming industry and some of the nation’s most well-known professional and college sports teams made Ohio a sought-after target for legal sports betting since the Supreme Court struck down the federal wagering ban in May 2018.
Despite bipartisan, bicameral support, legislation floundered before a House bill that would allow the state’s commercial casinos and hybrid casino-horse track “racinos” to offer retail and online sports bets passed the House easily in May, giving the Senate nearly half a year to either pass their own bill on to the House or reach a compromise on the other legislation.
Over the ensuing six months, the Senate’s General Government committee heard largely positive testimony from the nation’s leading gaming stakeholders, including DraftKings, FanDuel, Penn National (Barstool Sports), Boyd Gaming, MGM and Jack Entertainment, all of which could have access to the Ohio sports betting market through casino partnerships. Meanwhile, leadership in the Republican-controlled legislature, as well as GOP Gov. Mike DeWine, all publicly supported legal wagering.
Still, the bill stalled. Lawmakers in the Senate and House differed between oversight by the state gaming commission and lottery, among other differences, but the bigger factor appeared to be legislative momentum (or lack thereof). With the year-round session truncated by the pandemic — and altered by a change in House leadership following Householder’s arrest — sports betting fell to the wayside amid hundreds of other bills considered in 2020.
Backers fought until the last few weeks of the session, introducing a substitute amendment to ostensibly appease the casino operators that permitted only one online sportsbook license apiece earlier this month. Despite universal support for the amended proposal in the Senate committee, it still never took up the bill for a vote to advance it before the full Senate floor, effectively killing it for 2020.
Possible Next Moves in 2021.
Ohio will again be a leading sports betting legalization contender in 2021 as supporters hope last year’s progress can finally help push a bill to fruition. Again, that process may not come easily.
Neither of the 2020 Senate bill’s sponsors will return after Sen. Sean O’Brien lost his 2020 re-election bid and Sen. John Eklund was unable to run again due to term limits. House bill sponsor Dave Greenspan also lost his re-election bid, leaving only Rep. Brigid Kelly among this year’s sports betting sponsors returning in 2021.
Kelly, and/or a new group of sponsors, will have to start the legislative process over again when the 2021 session begins Jan. 4. The framework laid out by the failed 2020 bills is a good start, but the political obstacles that have stalled passage will likely remain.
Meanwhile a new group of lawmakers will have to consider sports betting among a myriad of issues, most notably the state’s continued legislative and fiscal response to the pandemic.
Proponents argue retail sportsbooks at state casinos and, more importantly, legal mobile betting options statewide could help ameliorate the state’s daunting $2 billion budget shortfall. Backers also note that by as early as next month, four of Ohio’s five bordering states (Michigan, Indiana, West Virginia and Pennsylvania) could have legal statewide mobile betting, all of which cater to Ohioans looking to cross state lines to place a bet.
However, the few million dollars Ohio could plausibly generate in monthly tax revenues would, in a best-case scenario, be a small piece of the state’s budget puzzle. The more consequential decisions facing Buckeye State lawmakers will define the 2021 session, and it’s possible a comparatively minor proposal could, once again, fall short in the legislature.
Despite these obstacles, Ohio will be among the most closely monitored of the dozen or so states seriously considering sports betting next year. Backers are still hopeful the early 2020 momentum in the statehouse could help, finally, legalize sports betting in 2021.
