Not only is New Jersey the new No. 1 state in the nation for sports betting handle, it’s covering a big spread of $1.7 billion over the runner-up Nevada.
Nevada’s sportsbooks handled $588.4 million from bettors in the month of December, an increase of 3 percent from December 2019, and they won $40.6 million, an increase of 11.7 percent, for a hold of 6.9 percent compared to 6.36 percent last December.
As expected, the figures were down for 2020 as a whole due to the COVID-19 pandemic shutting down the major sports for several months. Brick-and-mortar casinos were also shuttered from mid-March through early June, though that helped spur more wagering through mobile apps. Nevada sportsbooks handled $4.3 billion for the year, a decrease of 18.4 percent from 2019, while the overall win was $262.8 million, down 20.2 percent (note: despite the overall downturn, football set records with an annual handle of $1.9 billion, up 2.7 percent, and win of $127.7 million, up 4.3 percent). Mobile wagering accounted for 57.1 percent of the wagers, though that hit 60 percent in December.

Those numbers pale in comparison to New Jersey, which has taken over as the top state for sports betting due to its much broader population base. New Jersey, which has only been in the legal sports betting industry since 2018 when the U.S. Supreme Court overturned the federal ban, handled an all-time record (for any month) $996.2 million in December, with $929.3 million being bet via mobile apps for a whopping 93 percent. The Garden State handled $6 billion overall in 2020 to break Nevada’s all-time annual record of $5.3 billion set in 2019, and Jersey’s overall win was nearly 50 percent higher at another all-time record of $393.2 million.
In addition to more prevalent mobile betting being helpful during a pandemic, New Jersey enjoys another advantage in that its large neighbor, New York, does not yet offer wagering via app.
Nevada still ranked No. 2 in the nation in 2020 sports betting handle. Here’s the top 5 (though note that Illinois hasn’t released its complete 2020 figures yet and it’s projected to be around $1.5 billion to push past Colorado at No. 5):
$6.0 billion, New Jersey.
$4.3 billion, Nevada.
$3.5 billion, Pennsylvania.
$1.8 billion, Indiana.
$1.2 billion, Colorado.
But while there might be some shuffling downlist, one thing is clear, New Jersey is No. 1 on the money list and it’s not even close.

Since the inception of sports betting in New Jersey in June, casinos and racetracks throughout the Garden State wasted little time hopping on board and allowing gamblers to place bets online and in person.
As the prized NFL season fast approaches, six of the nine Atlantic City casinos in Atlantic City will allow gamers to place sports bets. Two racetracks - Monmouth Park and the Meadowlands - also offer sports betting. (Gov Phil Murphy placed the first legal sports bet in New Jersey at Monmouth Park.)
New Jersey collected $325,000 in tax revenue from sports betting in July, and while that number looks like the state would fall short of its revenue projections, experts believe busines is guaranteed to pick up once football season officially begins.
Sports betters still have to wait and see if places like Hard Rock or Tropicana will incorporate sports betting onto their casino floor.
But in the mean time, we've compiled a list of all the places you can make a sports bet in New Jersey:
The Borgata was the first Atlantic City casino to offer sports betting, opening its sports book on June 14, the day it became legal.
NBA legend Julius Erving, aka Dr. J lead the way, wagering $5 on a repeat Super Bowl victory for the Philadelphia Eagles.
The Race & Sports Book is located adjacent to the poker room in the location formerly known as the Racebook. On August 22, Borgata also began taking sports bets online via Android mobile phones.
The first bet it took was $50 on the Philadelphia Eagles to repeat as Super Bowl champions. The casino earned $562,830 in sports betting revenue in the month of July.
Caesars Entertainment owns three properties in Atlantic City - Bally's, Harrah's and Caesars casino.
The company launched sports betting on July 30 inside Bally's Wild Wild West casino. Ceasars casino is right next door and the company said guests at either property can use the sports book at Bally's, so there is no immediate plan to open a separate sports book at Ceasers.
Harrah's incorporated sports betting just days after on Aug. 1.
Caesars Entertainment said both locations called "The Book" are temporary, as they are work to build out permanent sports betting facilities over the next nine months.
The company also has plans to introduce mobile sports betting on the Caesars Casino & Sports mobile app. Caesars Entertainment has yet to release a timetable on mobile sports betting.
Atlantic City's Golden Nugget casino, which is in the marina district along with The Borgata, began offering sports betting on Aug. 15.
Ocean Resort Casino offered sports betting the day it opened its doors on June 28, after revitalizing the former Revel casino.
Ocean partnered with William Hill, a company operating more than 100 race and sports books in Nevada as well as a mobile betting app.
The 7,500-square-foot sports book sits in the middle of the casino's gaming floor with a bar, video viewing area and live InPlay betting odds.
Ocean Resort pulled in the most sports wagering revenue in July with over $1 million.

The Resorts Casino Hotel Sports Book features six betting windows, four self-service kiosks, and a 12-foot video wall with 15 television screens.

The Meadowlands Racetrack, which began sports betting July 14, took in nearly $3.5 million in sports bets during its first nine days of accepting such bets.
The FanDuel Sportsbook is located in East Rutherford, in the same sports complex six miles from New York City where the NFL's New York Giants and Jets play.
The Meadowlands said they plan to expand the sports book.
Gov. Phil Murphy cast the first legal sports wager in New Jersey at a ceremony at Monmouth Park racetrack in Oceanport on June 14.
Monmouth Park had become the face of the state's battle to legalize sports gaming, having spent millions on the case and to build its parlor with British bookmaker William Hill.
The sports book is open seven days a week.
Two casinos in Atlantic City have yet to officially announce plans to add a physical sports book, Hard Rock Hotel and Casino and Tropicana Casino and Resort.
The Hard Rock reportedly signed deals with two European sports betting companies, Kindred and Bet365 to incorporate online sports betting in the future, however the entertainment company has yet to provide a timeline.
During the Hard Rock grand opening ceremony on June 28, CEO Jim Allen told the media that the company was placed under certain restrictions when it came to sports betting, due to a partnership with the NFL and the Miami Dolphins.
A Hard Rock spokesperson said there is still a possibility of adding an in-person sports book to the casino floor. Those details have yet to be revealed.
Tropicana has not announced plans to add sports betting. Company officials declined to comment on the casino's plans.
