п»їWhat are Teasers in Sports Betting?
Side-note: I am not sure if there is anything that fills me with more pure joy than waking up on a 50 degree fall morning in New England, running downtown to grab my coffee, walking my dog and then sitting down on my couch two-hours prior to kickoff to lock in my bets for the day.
It started off as a weekly tradition amongst friends and family, where we would gather every Sunday morning and talk about what teams we liked to win their respective games that day. That started when I was about 15 years old, way before I knew anything about betting against the spread. Fast-forward about five years and it had quickly transitioned to breaking down spreads, parlays, teasers, and where the sharp money was going. To this day, my buddies and I still try to chip-in and throw down on a four-leg teaser every Sunday during the NFL season. I wish we could say we win more times than we lose but that would simply be a lie.
For those that are not familiar with betting NFL teasers, I will attempt to give you a quick rundown. It’s one of the most popular ways of betting on the NFL, as it accounts for nearly 15% of a sportsbooks handle on any given week during the NFL season.
A teaser bet is a group of straight bets (two or more) combined into one bet, where each individual line has been shifted to your favor by the number of points of the teaser. There are three main NFL teasers – 6, 6.5 and 7 point teasers.
The same rules apply for 6.5 point teasers and 7 point teasers, except the line is shifted in your favor by 6.5 or 7 points rather than just 6 as listed in the example above.
The more teams you add onto your teaser, the less likely your chances of winning.
But the main reason why teasers have become so popular in recent years is because of how well-balanced the NFL has become. Sure, there are the elite teams in the NFL that beat their opponents by 10 or more points (looking at you, Patriots). But 25 teams across the NFL in 2018 had an average margin of victory or loss of +/- seven points. A teaser bet on a team that is a four-point underdog or more allows the bettor to feel more comfortable placing a bet on an inferior team because simply, more likely than not, they won’t lose by more than double-digits.
Teasing a team that’s favored by -7.5 or -8.5 down to -1.5 or -2.5 is also very popular because:
It falls within a field goal, which is relevant when we’re talking about football. It falls within the average margin of victory for most superior teams.

Teaser Betting.
These days it seems every sport betting forum on the net is buzzing about “Wong Teasers” and “Teaser Betting Strategy”. I’ll be honest, as someone who’s made a steady profit each year since 1999 betting teasers, I wasn’t thrilled when “teaser strategy” became the betting forum topic. Rewinding to almost a decade ago, soon after Stanford Wong released the book Sharp Sports Betting , Las Vegas sportsbooks started losing money on teasers. Today its nearly impossible to find a +EV bet in Las Vegas as far as teasers are concerned. Thankfully, online there are still plenty of options, but how long might that last?
Even though I’m still reluctant, considering the cat is out of the bag so to speak, I’ve decided to write this comprehensive article about teaser betting to clear a few things up, and contribute. Here I’ll break everything down to as simple as possible, and not only show you which teaser bets are profitable, but help you understand why they are profitable. After reading this article, you’ll be well equipped to bet teasers with the odds in your favor. I believe strongly that you’ll benefit from the info on this page, so I ask a small favor: please consider supporting our site by either linking to it in a blog post or forum, or joining an online sportsbook using one of our links (such as 5Dimes.eu for example).
For those not familiar with teasers, I’ll start with intro material. I encourage experienced bettors to simply skim the first few sections.
What is a Teaser Bet?
Standard Teaser Odds.
Teaser Rules for Pushes.
The rules for pushes are generally the same at each site. If a leg in a teaser pushes while any other leg is a loss, the teaser bet is graded a loss. A push and all wins reduce the same as they would in a parlay. For example, a three team teaser with the results: push/win/win is paid as a two team teaser. In the case where there are no losses, but only a single win, bets are refunded (example: 2 Teamer with push/win = no action and bets are refunded).
An Intro to Advanced Teaser Strategy.
As we mentioned, a teaser bet is a parlay using a modified point spread. In order to analyze teasers strategically, we need to break the bet down to the point where we understand what odds we are paying per leg. If this is at all confusing, don’t worry, it should make sense momentarily.
Let’s start with 2 team 6 point (-110) teasers. As you might already know, to break even at -110 you need to win 52.38% of your bets. The formula used to calculate this is risk divided by return, where return equals stake plus win. For example, a bettor risks $110 to win $100, the return is $210, so the math here is $110 risk/$210 return=0.5238 which is 52.38%. This is how often “both” legs of a teaser must win for the bet to be break even. In order to do any sort of statistical analysis of teasers, we need to ask ourselves “how often must each leg individually win to achieve a 52.38% win rate?” To calculate this, what we need to know is what number times itself equals 0.5238. Using a square root calculator, we find 0.7237 x 0.7237 = 0.5238. This means that each individual leg must win 72.37% of the time on average for the teaser bet to have neutral (break even) expectation. To keep from getting math intensive, I’ll simplify things and tell you to Google search “Moneyline Converter”, plug in 72.37%, and see in American odds format that this equates to a moneyline of -262.
We’ve now deciphered a two team six point teaser at -110. What we have is a two team parlay at -262 per team. The bookmaker sold us six points and charged us 152 cents (from the standard -110) for those points.
After running this math on several options, I get the following odds for how often individual legs must win for the given teaser to break even:
The Golden Key to Teaser Betting.
Now, if you’re a savvy bettor familiar with teasers, a light bulb might have just turned on in your head. If not, don’t worry, you’re likely overwhelmed and need more time to adjust. To determine if a teaser is a better option than a straight bet, we need to know if those six additional points increases the win probability by 19.73% or not.
The truth of the matter is that most teasers are sucker bets, because very few times will six points increase your win probability by 19.73%. To do this, you need to cross key numbers. In the NFL, the most common margins of victory in order are 3, 7, 10, 6, 14, 4, 1, 17, 13 and 2. This is why basic strategy teasers have historically been +EV.
Basic Strategy Teasers:
So how have bettors following basic strategy faired in recent years?
Today is November 19, 2010. I specify that date so you know the sample size I am working with. Since the Start of the 2006 NFL season Week 1, to as recent as the Thursday night game of the 2010 NFL season Week 11, legs included in basic strategy teasers have gone 101-45 (69.17%). Unfortunately, that means blindly following all “Wong Teasers” has not been profitable. The good news is that a modified basic strategy has been profitable.
Breaking down the teaser results into four subsets here are the results:
Home Favorites -7.5 to -8.5 Teased to -1.5 to -2.5 23-7 (76.67%)
Road Favorites -7.5 to -8.5 Teased to -1.5 to -2.5 9-4 (69.23%)
Update on October 27th, 2014:
Here is the data since 2004:
*Note I can only get the data to the nearest percentage, but that is fine for this.
So while I found that small road underdogs teased up haven’t been profitable since 2004, I also went ahead and looked at the other two and noticed that…
So as you can see three of the four are profitable.
But, the sportsbooks are there to try and make money so what some of them have started doing is “line shading” so that you can’t get these numbers to tease up or down 6 points. Check out my video below to learn more about line shading:
If you were to simply stick to road dogs and home favorites, you’d be well over the required break even win rate. Now, this does have sample size issues, and some criticize this as “data mining”, but to be blunt: I don’t care and am no longer including the home dogs in a teaser. There has been a trend in the NFL for quite some time now: teams play more aggressively on the road than they do at home. At home, they are often running down and managing the clock, where on the road they’re looking to get up an additional possession. This applies to certain teams and coaches more than others, but it is food for thought for your analysis/handicapping when deciding which teams to put in a teaser.

Table of Contents 1. Teaser Examples 2. Is a Teaser a Good Bet? 3. How to Place a Teaser Bet 4. Different Types of Teasers 5. General Teaser Rules 4. A Pleaser, Explained.
A teaser is a type of sports bet that allows you to adjust the point spread on multiple games, but requires you to win every game to cash the bet.
The sportsbook isn’t giving you those six points for free, though, adjusting your payout based on how many points you’re buying and how many games you picked.
At its core, a teaser is a parlay in which you’re buying a lot of points on every game. Teasers are common in football and basketball, and can be used on both point spreads and over/unders.
Teaser Examples.
The most common teaser in sports betting is a 6-point football teaser, in which you have to pick two games correctly but get six additional points on each line.
Let’s use this example from the 2019 NFL season. A Redskins and 49ers teaser in Week 16 looked like this:
The Redskins were a 1-point underdog and lost 41-35.
The 49ers were a 7-point favorite and won 34-31.
Neither the Redskins nor the 49ers covered the original point spread, but both would have covered in a teaser.
You’re not getting these points for free, though.
Because the sportsbook is giving you six extra points on two games, the juice on this teaser is -110. You’d risk $11 to win $10.
It’s the same price as a straight bet, but you need to win both games to cash the bet.
Is a Teaser a Good Bet?
Teasers are not good bets in college football due to the volatility, nor on totals or many NFL point spreads.
Teasers are only good bets over a large sample when you go through two key numbers in the NFL. This idea was popularized by Stanford Wong and is known as the Wong Teaser.
And for favorites, you want to bet them down through 7 and 3 — from -7.5 to -1.5, for example.
Bettors must win each leg 72.3% of the time for a 6-point teaser to break even. (That assumes the book is charging you -110. If they’re charging -120 or more, like some books are, these numbers are moot).
Even since 2015 when the NFL moved the extra point back (which caused more unusual finishing margins), teasing NFL games through those key numbers has been profitable.
The margin of victory in NFL games is most often 3, 6 and 7 — those make up 30% of all finishing score differentials, so they’re the most “key” numbers in football betting.
These bets are called teasers for a reason — it looks so easy for an NFL team to cover with an additional six points, but needing to win both games makes it much more challenging.
How to Place a Teaser Bet.
Placing a teaser bet might like a little different by sportsbook. Generally, the option is going to appear after you’ve selected two games you want to tease.
1. Choose the Games You Want to Tease.
I never advocate teasing basketball games, but let’s use a college basketball example from FanDuel.
Let’s say you want to tease Duke down to -4 and Baylor down to -2. Select those bets at your sportsbook.
2. Head to Your Bet Slip.
Next, you’ll go to your bet slip, which is usually in the top right corner.
3. Click “Teaser”
At FanDuel, the teaser option will be one spot over from a straight bet. Click that.
Now it will give you the option to change how many points you want to buy, and the payout.
At FanDuel, getting four points on each game in basketball will make your teaser -110.
At DraftKings, you follow the same process, but teasers are grouped in with parlays. Once you get to your bet slip, click parlay, then click teaser underneath your bets.
You can bet teasers now at DraftKings and get a $1,000 sign-up bonus.
Are There Different Types of Teasers?
A 6-point, two-team football teaser is most common, but you can get real creative with teasers if you want.
Because a teaser is really just a parlay with adjusted prices, you can do almost anything.
A six-team, 6-point teaser A two-team, 10-point football teaser A four-team, 4-point basketball teaser.
General Teaser Rules.
Betting teasers is in general a -EV decision. But then again, so is all sports betting if you have no edge.
Some general points about teasers to keep in mind:
What On Earth Is a Pleaser?
With teasers, you’re buying points.
A pleaser is the opposite of a teaser — you’re selling points in at least two games for a bigger payout.
That’s a pleaser.
A two-team, six-point pleaser pays around 6-1 at some sportsbooks. So bettors need to win each leg about 38% of the time to break even.

A teaser is another type of wager available to bet on sports. A Teaser is not a straight bet, but is more similar to a parlay, but comes with much different odds and odds of winning. Often under-utilized, the teaser can be a valued weapon in a bettor’s arsenal if they know how to use them correctly. These types of wagers allow for multiple selections or “legs” to make up one all-encompassing bet, but give the bettor a little more freedom with some help on the betting lines. Keep reading more below as we will explain further in-depth and help you understand how betting odds work when it comes to making a teaser bet.
What Is A Teaser Bet.
A teaser is akin to a parlay placed on a number of games, but the difference is that points are adjusted in order to help you. As you put together your selections onto your betting slip, instead of needing the lines as they are to hit, they will move a handful of points to make it more attainable. Of course, with this adjustment, the odds to win increase but that also means that you would not win the same amount that could be expected if you left it as a normal parlay. Like a parlay though, all of your selections must be correct and any one “leg” that was incorrectly chosen will result in a losing teaser wager.
Why Bet On Teasers.
Teasers can be advantageous to bettors that are fond of using parlays, but are not comfortable with the particular spreads or totals that have been set within a desired game.
A teaser allows the line to be shifted for these parlay-type wagers so that the percentage of winning them goes up in theory. As such, it makes them easier to win, unlike the opposite of a teaser, which is a pleaser. A pleaser takes points away making it more difficult to win the line by increasing the spread. But then the payout is much higher. For more information on pleasers, please visit the preceding link.
Example Of How A Teasers Work.
Say you want to take an NFL teaser on two games. The Green Bay Packers are favored by (-6) over the Detroit Lions, and the New England Patriots are (-3) favorites over the Baltimore Ravens. Those are the established betting lines for the two matchups by oddsmakers and you could take them just as they are (which is a parlay). But if you decide you want to take a teaser – let's use a six-point teaser as an example – the betting line is adjusted in your favor depending on which side of the betting line you want to bet.
So, say you like Green Bay and New England in this example. With a teaser, the betting lines will move so that the Patriots are now 3-point underdogs to Baltimore, and the Packers are now a pick'em against Detroit. Since the lines have moved, the payout is going to be less than leaving it as a parlay, but your odds of winning go up as it becomes much easier.
Other Types Of Teasers - Sweetheart Teasers.
Another type of teaser bet that not all gamblers know about is the sweetheart teaser. Sweetheart teasers are a special type of teaser bet that rewards players who understand point spreads better than the average gambler. Available at some sportsbooks, especially those that cater to the US market, so-called sweetheart teasers exist that give the gambler even more points to play around with (anywhere from 10 or 13) but there is a catch. Sweetheart teasers require that you pick at least four to six teams. Pushes on sweetheart teasers make your entire bet a losing proposition.
