Smith picks Ragone, Pees, Williams as Falcons’ co-ordinators.
ATLANTA - New Atlanta Falcons coach Arthur Smith began assembling his staff on Thursday by naming Dave Ragone, Dean Pees and Marquice Williams as co-ordinators.
Ragone, Pees and Williams will co-ordinate the Falcons’ offence, defence and special teams, respectively.
Also, Smith is retaining Falcons wide receivers coach Dave Brock.
Smith said Tuesday he will call Atlanta’s offensive plays.
“We want to be adaptable,” Smith said. “That will be a big thing here. We will play to the strengths of our team, but we want to be flexible and adaptable, and that’s one thing we are looking for schematically as we go through this process of hiring coaches.”
The Falcons hired Smith, the former Tennessee Titans offensive co-ordinator, on Friday. Smith worked with Ragone and Pees during his 10 years with the Titans.
The 38-year-old Smith joins 40-year-old Terry Fontenot, who on Tuesday was named Atlanta’s general manager.
Ragone was the Chicago Bears’ quarterbacks coach since 2016.
The 71-year-old Pees will come out of retirement to join Smith in Atlanta. He was hired by Tennessee in 2018 and announced his retirement after the 2019 season.
Pees, who was 17-51 as Kent State’s head coach from 1998-2003, has worked 16 years in the NFL, including a combined 12 seasons as the defensive co-ordinator for the New England Patriots, Baltimore Ravens and Titans.
Pees is one of eight NFL defensive co-ordinators to coach in a Super Bowl with two different teams — New England in 2007 and Baltimore in 2012. His defences have ranked in the top 12 in 10 of his 12 seasons as co-ordinator. His 2018 Titans unit ranked eighth in total defence and third in scoring.
Ragone was hired as Tennessee’s wide receivers coach in 2011 and coached the Titans’ quarterbacks in 2013.
Williams was Detroit’s assistant special teams coach. He was a defensive assistant with the Chargers before joining the Detroit staff in 2019.
Brock joined the Falcons staff in 2017 and has coached wide receivers and running backs. Under Brock in 2020, Calvin Ridley set career highs with 90 receptions for 1,374 yards and led the team with nine touchdown catches. He was selected a second-team All-Pro.
Fontenot, who is Atlanta’s first Black GM, spent 18 seasons with the NFC South rival New Orleans Saints, most recently as assistant GM.

Knicks assign Dennis Smith Jr. to G League after former lottery pick's reported request.
Smith, who played a total of 28 minutes this season for New York, will get to play in the upcoming G League season.
Less than four years ago, Dennis Smith Jr. was the No. 9 overall pick in the 2017 NBA Draft. But after a fairly promising rookie season with the Dallas Mavericks, Smith was dealt to the New York Knicks as part of the Kristaps Porzingis trade, and never really found his place at Madison Square Garden.
This season, under new coach Tom Thibodeau, Smith has struggled with injuries and found himself on the periphery of the team, playing just 28 minutes over three games so far. As a result, he reportedly asked the team to allow him to play in the G League bubble next month, according to Stefan Bondy of the New York Daily News:
Eager for reps and an opportunity to demonstrate he's still an NBA prospect, Knicks guard Dennis Smith Jr. has requested to play in the G League bubble, the Daily News has learned. The Knicks are expected to grant Smith Jr.'s G League request, according to a league source.
The Knicks made the move official Monday morning, announcing that Smith Jr., along with Ignas Brazdeikis and Jared Harper, will be joining the Westchester Knicks for the upcoming G League season in Orlando.
In order to complete some semblance of a season, the G League is set to take advantage of the bubble set up that the NBA used at Disney World. Eighteen teams will travel to Florida to play a 15-game season that tips-off in mid-February.
While it takes a bit of bravery and honest self-reflection to ask to be sent down to the G League, this is a smart decision by Smith. He's barely played for the Knicks and doesn't seem to have a clear path towards regular minutes, especially not after rookie guard Immanuel Quickley's brilliant start.
In the bubble, Smith will not only have a chance to actually play some meaningful basketball again, but also an opportunity to perhaps impress another team ahead of his impending free agency this summer. His rookie deal ends after this season, and it seems unlikely he'll be back in New York given how things have gone.

Who is Alex B. Smith?
What sports does he bet on?
Alex focuses his bets on the NHL, NFL, NCAA Football, NCAA Hoops and UFC.
What are his handicapping systems/methods?
Smith is a firm believer in looking at the intangibles. Key game situations. momentum, scheduling and weather as well as breaking down the important numbers and following strict bankroll management. A big fan of obscure college teams, His plays suit the long-term investors who play to win consistent money, as well as the causal bettors and action players.
What is his strategy for pick rating and bankroll management?
6* = Top Play, my standard selection on a game. 8* = Best Bet, a stronger play that I will have every so often on a card 10* = Game of the Month or Year, a top-rated play for that sport based on season.
What should I expect for pick volume and release time?
My highest volume sports are College Football, College Hoops & NHL Hockey, based on a per week and per season basis, respectively. I am a lower-volume player when it comes to NFL & UFC. I look to have plays for daily sent out with analysis by Mid-Afternoon, to make sure that all angles have been covered, especially when double-checking lineups & injuries. With Football, I'm usually set on a card by the middle of the week.
