Refugee crisis

The new books that the Ministry published for the Senior High School English classes are brilliant!

We were pleasantly surprised and grateful for this material. The units are enriched with videos, applications and  original material that are very interesting and informative.

Being influenced by such a unit, I prepared this lesson for the 3rd class which was not granted such a book this year.

  1. We begin the lesson by watching this short video, which will introduce the topic and activate relevant vocabulary and information.

2) Students are then asked to share their thoughts on a Padlet wall. I use Padlet a lot, because it is a wonderful way to have students write while at the same time they can use videos, posters, images to enrich their entry. The best advantage of Padlet is that they can see what their classmates write in real time. Here is what they came up with:

3) They read a relevant text and do the activities assigned

4) The second teaching hour is dedicated to the creation of comic strips. They are given instructions to use Pixton and upload their creations on a second Padlet wall such as this

5) The 3rd teaching hour is dedicated to playing an online role game. It is created by the UN Refugee Agency and is designed to help users get a glimpse into a refugee’s life, consider the adversities and feel for their terrible situation.

6) We finish with a discussion and the assignment of a writing activity.

I was pleased with the whole session. It took us 3 hours to finish but the result was a class of students who both used their language and IT skills, and were motivated to know more about a burning issue of today.

Here is the entire task sheet:
