Tea time!

Don’t you think that cultural awareness is as important as any other aspect of language learning? Lately, I have come to realise the power of the cultural elements that I struggle to incorporate in my lesson with my teenage students at school. They seem to be more than willing to absorb any kind of cultural information they find interesting!

The following session was designed after a student of mine simply asked one day: “Miss, do the British still drink tea?” To their mind, drinking tea was an outdated habit of some people living on the British Isles, typical of the aristocrats maybe. I was more than happy to inform them that the British still drink tea, no matter their status, education or financial situation. It is a  habit, so deeply rooted in their mentality that is worth exploring.

So, we had a two-hour session; the first included the activities you will find below and the second was a Tea-Time meeting (inside the school schedule) where we drank some tea, ate muffins and enjoyed our time in relaxation! I can’t describe the positive effects this had on the students’ mood and attitude towards the English class in general. Some repetition is expected of course…..
